Harry Potter 8

I'm sitting in Vancouver airport and, despite the fact it doesn't open for another 25 days, I'm just plain excited about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two.

So I thought we could all share in this mutual excitement by making a thread!

I've already booked my ticket to the midnight screening at the BFI IMAX and I see that cinemas in the UK are showing all the previous movies on the big screen the week before, so I'm going to go to all of them. Long story short the preceding week is going to be distinctly Potter orientated.

The trailers look awesome. I saw the new one before Green Lantern and those two minutes were worth more of the ticket price than the entire movie that followed.

So who else is excited?

I'm hoping the 3D glasses will hide my welcome escapee tears.

Although I'm not quite sure whether I'll be seeing it in 3D. I never can wear the glasses (or any) without being irritated.

It's bitter sweet to see it end. I can't wait to see it, but then it's over.

The build up is going to be unbearable once the interviews/TV trailers start flowing.

Interesting reading the Empire issue, never had the "end" been so literal, when they had to destory sets that where there from the beginning. Must have been a heartwrenching experience.

Here, here.

It's gonna be sooooo goood!!! A freaking roller coaster ride. I may actually go see it more than once. Which I haven't done since Titanic.

If there was a movie I'd go to a midnight screening of, it would be this. But I don't do midnight screenings. Mainly because I work early on Fridays and Saturdays. But also because I'm really a 75-year-old trapped in a 24-year-old's body.

Also, have you seen this yet? http://www.pottermore.com/ I hope it's an online version of that Potter universe dictionary thing that Rowling has/hasn't been working on. And not some viral marketing campaign for the movie...

I haven't purchased tickets yet (I'm not one for crowds, so I'll probably wait a week or so before seeing it, and likely then an early show, if possible), but I'm very excited. I just finished a re-read of the series in anticipation, mostly on my lunch breaks at work. I've proven the biggest geek in the office by knowing bits of HP trivia (of course, I had suspected that, given that I'm the only one with a video game related tattoo that I know of).

Of course, because of that, I am unbelievably excited by what's coming in the next film. On my first read, I thought Half-Blood Prince was my favorite book, but it's really my favorite because of what happens at the end of Deathly Hallows. Great book, and I've loved the films (starting with the third, the first two I watch mostly due to completist tendancies). VERY excited to see the last film....

And, hey, some good bits with Luna still to come!

I think six was my favorite book, as well. But IMO they really dropped the ball with the movie adaptation of that one. I can't help but feel that those who have only seen the movies are missing out on the real story.

Plus I think the movie would have been more well served to delve into what I think was the best part. Which was Voldemort's psyche. They wasted all this time on the annoying Lavender Brown and 'snogging' while cutting 70% of Harry and Dumbledore's 'lessons.'

The exploration of the mind of an evil madman. It could have been the HP Silence of the Lambs.

Book 6 is definitely my favorite of the books, and that with 7 go so well together, they are hardly separate to me.

The movie and changes didn't bother me much at all. Movies are adaptations, so they cannot be exact reproductions (Philosopher's Stone excepted). I loved how some movie-only moments caught the spirit of the characters so well - like when Ron & Harry see the new potions book and the old one, stare for a second, then fight over who gets the newer text book. Wasn't in the novel, but was a perfect character moment that matches anything Rowling wrote.

Gonna be completely honest -- I'm kinda lukewarm about the entire Potter series. However, I think it's fun to simply come along for the ride, when your friends are excited about something. I've got a friend at work who is a major Potter-head, so I'll be joining her for the midnight premiere. She's going as Hermione. I'll be going as Hagred. Pictures shall be posted.

Yates has dropped the ball on every movie. They're good but not as good as they could have been in the hands of another director.

My fav books: 3 and 6.

My fav movies: 3 (Cuaron) and 4 (Newell).

Lol you guys are lucky they're screening the previous ones the week before. I wanted to watch the last 7 again before the 8th releases.

I have them all on DVD and every month or two I watch them all simaultaneously. It's my comfort zone.

Have to disagree with you Ernest about Yates though. I think everyone agrees that Cuaron's adaptation is the most interesting but, in my opinion, it is also the film that has the greatest distance from the 'spirit' of the books. I think the fact that he had even read them when he signed on to direct shines through. I love the film, I just think that Yates gets the books a little bit better. Order of the Phoenix is my favorite book (because I'm the uber nerd who things that long equals good) but it was such a difficult task wrestling that into s decent movie and he did a great job. In fact I love all the films, with the possible exception of Goblet of Fire to which I am largely indifferent.

Zensteve: See 'em, old man! :D

Don't worry, you, me , and Peter Griffin, all feel this way. You can join too Zen

I've never dressed up as a character from the books but I might Sharpie a scar on my forehead for July 14th.

I'm still undecided on how I want to build up to film eight. The week before I can go to these screenings at the cinema which would be nice (and I can go for free) but I wish they were doing an all day on the 14th. The BFI is doing all night Potterthons but theyre happening before I get back and that's only three movies in a row... I have all the DVDs, of course, and could just watch them myself...

Decisions, decisions...
