Harry Potter 8

Not fussed by the e-books to be honest. I only read the hard copies and I already have the audiobooks at my eartips.

A few years ago I would have been super excited by Pottermore but now I'm not too bothered. I'm interested to read/see all the unreleased stuff but I've got no desire to social network with other Harry Potter fans or be coerced into buying more merchandise. I'll check it out for sure but I'm more excited about the last movie, the Potter exhibit in the UK and the prospect of expanding the theme park.

I'm with you there, I don't plan on buying anything unless you have to pay for the unreleased material. And I've got all the social networking I need between here and facebook.

But omg, I'm REALLY looking forward to reading that unreleased stuff!

I hadn't heard about the theme park. By expanding do they just mean on the Universal lot in Florida or are they building another park?

What kind of 'exhibit in the UK' are we talking about here?

New stuff is good, and hey, new stuff for free rather than milking another book after she said she was done, I can appreciate that. Sort of a deleted scenes/director's cut. I don't care much about the social networking/game aspect, or the e-books. I agree that the new movie is the more exciting news to me right now! And the pre-game DVD marathon!

I'm making a presumption here. When I went last summer the Harry Potter bit was packed and pretty much all the other 'Islands of Adventure' were empty. I know that they've done incredible business on the back of the Wizarding World and I know that adjacent Lost Continent is being close, so putting two and two together I presume they're going to expand the Pottere section.

The tour sounds neat.

I'm excited to hear any further hidden gems JKR has been hiding from us. But the release of the "E-Books" doesn't interest me.

Stoked to see the final film. Have a feeling there's going to be a mutual scream of "Nyaaaaaaaaahhhh" at the end.

I assume that's in reference to
Albus Severus Potter
? I've seen people react that way online, but I don't quite get it.
Sure, it's a horrible name to saddle a kid with, but most names in the wizarding world are pretty awful. I only assume that the reaction is towards Harry honoring Snape, which, again, I don't get. Snape is a wonderfully complex character, and ultimately does everything he does, good and evil out of love, which Harry respects.
I loved the epilogue, as did many of my friends, though most people I knew read the whole series as adults, rather than growing up with it, so that might be part of the different perspective.

Thought I would update people on my day- especially as the World Premiere is tomorrow!

I went down to Trafalgar Square today in order to collect a wristband that would/will let me enter the red carpet enclosure tomorrow evening. I had heard that there were 6000 available so I thought it would be a breeze. To cut a long story short I ended up queuing for five hours! I posted some pictures of the queue on my Twitter (www.twitter.com/TheClapperBored) if you're interested and I'll try and post one of my awesome new limited edition HP8 wristband.

I've rarely ever had to queue for something as badly organised as that. There were about four stewards trying to organise queues (with no barriers to divide people up) in one of the busiest parts of one of the busiest cities in the world. And it rained.

Anyhow what's done is done and I've got my wristband!

Check out this first review of the film if you want to get REALLY excited!!!

Crazy awesome, Nick! Can't wait for your review. I can't imagine how crazy that must have been, getting the bracelet. I couldn't do it myself, but I can see putting forth the effort; this really is a once in a lifetime sort of thing!

As an aside, not a really well written review. I mean, I realize everyone and their brother has read the books by now (though there are a few around the office who are waiting until after they see the movie to finish the last one). But describing the last scene in the movie? Really? Isn't that a cardinal no-no of review writing? If it's not, it probably should be...

Wow, Nick, your enthusiasm is infectious. But, yeah, that review does have me drooling to see it. I love the movies. I haven't read the books, but they are on my to-do list. I don't much mind the critic's reveal in his review because even I have heard the spoilers from when the last book was released.

You know, one of my all time favorite things in all of cinema is Alan Rickman's Professor Snape. Even not having read the books, I've long felt that Rickman is perfectly cast as Snape. Really one of the best examples of movie magic, that is, everything coming together in a beautiful and satisfying way, as far as I'm concerned. I'm enchanted by that critic's description of the scene with Harry's Mother.

Anyhow...damn right I too am stoked about seeing it. :)

I think, and so does pretty much everyone, that Alan Rickman is great as Snape but in terms of the actual books he's about 15 years too old.

And, yes, that review does have spoilers. Spoilers in reviews are poor form (I only do it if the film is so bad that I don't care if people get upset) but I guess with Harry Potter in slightly different in that enough time has passed since the publication of the 7th book so that you can expect people to know the story. It's a bit like publishing plot points about the original trilogy of Star Wars in reviews of the newer Star Wars films...

So I'm going to head down this afternoon. Luckily it's pouring with rain...yay...

How did I miss this thread?! I can't wait to see the final instalment, if only because I love complaining. I do not like the movies. If I'd never read the books I might, but I probably wouldn't understand what was happening most of the time.

I could rant for hours about the HP movies, but I won't :p

I am very interested to see how they wrap it all up though.

Now I know what it feels like to live outside the US. It doesn't come out here until the 15th :(

So jealous, Nick! Have fun!

Doesn't come out here until the 15th either!

Just about to head off. Will probably be posting pictures on Twitter this evening if anyone has the mildest curiosity!

Aw, why not? Lots of fans on board here, and plenty of people who like hearing different opinions/perspectives!

I kinda feel that way about the first two movies; I don't like them much, but I don't really like the first two books either. While it would be neat to get every detail in the movies (Peeves is notably missed, and SPEW was an important character development thing), books and movies are (and should be) different experiences. When they realized that, I felt the movies became better.

I can't think of anything plot-critical that wasn't clear in the movies, and I like (in general) unexplained background details. They give the new viewer the impression of a deeper more developed world, and spur on the imagination. Fans, of course, already understand from the books, and it's neat seeing unimportant details preserved, even if they aren't relevant or necessary to the story.

Anyway, that's my two cents!
