The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. 9/10, if you haven't seen it yet, go watch it it's awesome!
Prologue directed by Béla Tarr - 8.5/10
I've always been skeptical of cinematic extremists. After hearing about Sátántangó and its seven hour running time and long slow contemplative shots, I've been intrigued by Tarr but at the same time cautious of his extremely contemplative style. I've finally gotten around to watching one of his films with this short. It's a contemplative one-shot film that implies many stories just by the faces it shows. The film is quite powerful, although it doesn't get very deep in its contemplation. I think I'm ready to watch more Tarr films though, as I am a fan of contemplative cinema and enjoyed this work a lot (although I'm not a big fan of long running times).
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Next directed by Miloš Forman - 10/10
A wonderful masterpiece, with several great performances! Initially, I was disappointed in how it portrayed mental illness but then I realized that the film was really about something else. It has a universal theme that anyone can connect to since they are able to go to school. The storytelling was amazing, and the music is haunting. What I loved most was the characters, and how it wasn't just about McMurphy, but also the development of the whole cast (esp. Chief).
I just watched this, I rate it 3/10
It lacked artistic vision for me, it was trying to be art and personal but felt like it was overdoing it, it was as if he was trying to be a smartass which just didn't work for me.
The ending gets me every time.
Short Term 12
The film/director/script has been mentioned as a possible 2014 Academy awards nominee.
I think they shot it entirely handheld with a camera shoulder rig. The director wanted to bring the audience close-up, be intimate with the actors and drama. Worked for me but indeed, some do not like that style. Is tripod such a luxury nowadays? What is wrong with people ffs.
Will take a look though ;p
Short Term 12 ... 8/10
The writer/director won a Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for the original draft.
The film/director/script has been mentioned as a possible 2014 Academy awards nominee.
I have read the original Nicholl-winning script which blew me away.
The movie cut quite a bit from it. If the movie had been based on the original script, I'm sure I would have scored it 9.5/10 or even a 10.
If you like dramas, watch this movie.
If you want to see how a potential Academy award movie can be shot in just 20 days, watch this movie.
The budget was indie low. So low they had to guerilla film in a bus, and complete filming within just 20 days.
Also watch this movie to see how great writing and directing skills can get you into the big leagues: Jennifer Lawrence will be starring in his next movie.
