hmm, that's a tough one. Maybe crystalized ginger put into a food processor with maybe some honey to thin/smooth it out a bit?

I'd suggest either Caramel, with brown sugar. Or earwax.
It's just hard for actors to swap earwax. Some might even object. 
Fudge perhaps?
I think those caramel sheets for apples you can get would be best. Though, depends on application... need a bit more detail to determine the exact perfect product.
You might be on to something, PTP. People are always asking me if I have shit in my ears. Suppose it's time for a checkup!
I do think caramel would work pretty well.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the obvious: caramel.
Sweetened condensed milk in a pan over heat and as it's starting to caramalise, pour in a bit of low-fat milk to prevent it from crystallising. Always keep stirring and never walk away from it and you'll end up with a lovely, viscous caramel that the crew can eat. Put some aside for your actors to just touch with the tips of their fingers and it'll look like they just stuck their fingers in their ears and had a good dig
