    Protecting story ideas?

I have been brainstorming a half dozen story ideas for a screenplay, have each one fleshed out to about a page 'treatment' each. Is that enough specifics for copyright? I should think so. I know the stories will morph with time, but I want to protect the ideas before I share them with...

Clooney / Zellweger in Duluth MN monday

George Clooney and Renee Zellwegger are going to be in my town of Duluth MN monday, giving a PR speech outside our little Duluth Depot art museum / historical train station / theatre. It will be kind of cool to see some big stars here. A PR thing, they are promoting their new film coming out...

"Ellie Parker" ... even cheap DV can make it

I tried watching "Ellie Parker" yesterday, a feature DVD starring Naomi Watts (Ring, Ring 2, King Kong, etc)--sorry but I just could not continue watching the DVD; thus my critique here is done without a full viewing of the DVD. Read other reviews e.g. on BlockBuster for more critiques...

    First Draft complete !

I just emailed off my complete first draft of a feature film screenplay (my first feature length screenplay) to my mentor/consultant. Well, I just had to shout it out somewhere :D if even just virtually here on a forum, a major personal achievement for me. Whether it gets turned into an indie...

    high concept v. simple plots+characterization

I watched "No Country for Old Men" last night. Powerful film. For such an action-oriented and violent film it struck me though how simple the plot was, no real high concept involved-- the plot was basically a search/recovery (of money) plot, also a survival (from killer) plot. No 'high...

% of WGA registrations that are shorts?

Anybody have any idea what percent of wga registrations are shorts compared to features? I would think shorts exceed features. I ask because I saw a figure from googling that 40,000 scripts are registered with wga each year, meaning there is a glutton of registered scripts. And thus a bit...

    sound mixer question

I am playing with a new toy, a "DV Promix 3 Portable Audio Mixer". It seems pretty clear on how to use it, except for one thing. The output XLR connectors have a switch that can be set to 40, 10, 0; these relate to dB levels to send to the camcorder audio XLR inputs. I am not sure which to...

    Book on Vegas Pro 8

I just pre-ordered a new book coming out at the end of this month on Vegas Pro 8, includes a DVD (not sure what will be on that), the author is the same guy (Douglas Spotting Eagle) at VAAST training that sells the video tutorials. Looks to be good. Just passing on the info for any other Vegas...

how many days for your shorts?

I am curious how many days you filmmakers put in for preproduction, production, post for short shorts (5-10 minute shorts)? What is your time commitment for casting, storyboarding, prinicple photography / production, and post?

pregnancy prosthetic to fake a pregnancy?

Anybody know where I could buy a prop to create a fake pregnancy look for a female role? I guess it would be nice to go the full distance and be able to simulate it even at the shirtless level, to look like skin. Otherwise I guess I might settle for something just under the shirt. Been...

    waterproof filming decision (input needed)

(edited) PROBLEM SOLVED !! :D:D:D http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/492310-REG/Ewa_Marine_VXA_VXA_Underwater_Housing.html ---- I could use some feedback on a decision I need to make. Two shorts I will make this summer involve scenes with water-- one filming people fly fishing in a stream...

    Line Producer / PM : cost ?

When I someday make a feature indie, what can I expect to pay for a production manager / line producer? Let's say for a film budget of $100,000 and also for a budget of $250,000. Is it typically a flat rate, monthly rate, percentage of the budget, back points, etc?

    free HD video clip downloads

FYI I just discovered this site http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx that has some free HD and also SD video clip downloads. I downloaded a few, they load fine into Sony Vegas Pro 8. I plan to use them for learning, playing with Vegas, etc.

    film look with HDV ?

What are some steps I can take to get a film look with HDV (Canon XH-A1)? I have a black pro mist filter i plan to use, I have heard that is one thing to do. Another is to shoot 24p, correct? Use a low (wider open aperature) f-stop when possible? Anything else? Should I also sandwich a...

    help needed choosing HD camcorder

I need (want) to purchase what I call a "burrito" camcorder -- one of the <$1000 consumer handheld camcorders, digital, true widescreen (~1900x1080). Could use some advice, suggestions. Here is the situation: I already own a Canon XH-A1 for the majority of my shooting. But I have a couple of...

    white room/walls and HDV lattitude?

Shooting HDV (Canon XH-A1). Will I get blowout if the room walls of an interior scene are white, because of digital's less forgiving lattitude compared to film, so that I should paint the walls a hue having more tone? The scene will be a bedroom scene, a couple in bed, futon mattress on a wood...

i'm contacting [potential] actors, ...now what?

Got my scripts, contacting potential actors both local and out of town (a few hrs drive). My question is what now in terms of contracts, how to (if even possible) make sure everybody shows up for the shoot, what it someone gets sick, etc.? If just one wannabe actor freaks out at the last minute...

    stories about weight loss (fat->normal)?

I came up with an idea for a feature film, romantic comedy, about the hero going from fat to normal. Other than "Norbit" or perhaps "Shallow Hal", can anybody think of similar film stories, so I can research how much my idea has been done before, how to make my story different?

    online copyright registration

Can't recall if I posted this before, but here is a useful link for registering screenplays online with the US Library of Congress Copyright Office. $35 compared $45 if done using paper. I just registered five short film screenplays as a collective work, costs me just $35; protection well worth...

I'm getting jazzed now about filmmaking :)

I am a noob, but wanting to make shorts-- well last year I got discouraged when the weather turned so bad for so long and I could not film my outdoor short. Over the winter I have written a number of shorts, tweaked them, and last week wrote one that I can film totally indoors at my home (yeah...
