    NY Times Cinematic Villainy

Read this at home in the magazine. Liked some, took issue with some -- the accompanying text was kind of stupid. Brad Pitt, for example, looks like an evil version of Henry Spencer in "Eraserhead," but they don't mention that movie at all. Glenn Close looks nothing like Theda Bara. My faves...

    Films of 2011 to watch?

Two of my favorites are "Hugo" (one of the two best 3D films, ever) and "The Artist." It doesn't hurt that they are both about film history. I second "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" (the other best 3D film, ever).

    Harmonica44 for Sainthood!

See, I like him too. Being tenacious is how you succeed. And as pointed out, he never gets mad when insulted...unlike myself, for example.

Could Sam Neill played the Joker?

He does have a very Cheshire smile. And he was pretty creepy in "Possession."

    The Next Action Heroine Screenplay

    They might break a nail.

    Compressing Footage?

Also, yes. But it is also a codec, and regularly wins compression awards as a codec. Codec just means "compressor/decompressor," as I'm sure you already know, and that's what x264 does; it is true that the output is an h264 variant. A better one. We are both correct! This benchmark page...

Anyone else getting off on Hell On Wheels?

Going to keep watching for now -- I just finally finished watching all of "Deadwood," so am in the mood for another western series. Your "Gene Hackman" vibe is provided by the always great Colm Meaney, who I think has his own vibe going on -- he plays great bad guys.

    Compressing Footage?

Withe the h264 codec, you can often easily reduce it to 20%-25% of its original size with little visible quality loss, so the 15% reduction you mention is no problem. I prefer the x264 codec myself, a variant of h264 that can often deliver somewhat better results.

One thing I hate about film festivals.

I was only justifying downloading one film, not all films. Nowhere have I ever said that here, so it's a stretch for you to claim that I have. I will say that the economics of the situation are not as black and white as many here make it out to be. Film studios are famous for creative...

Writers...What is your ideal writing setting?

You're in Georgia, right? I'm mostly in SF, but when I'm down in Los Angeles, it is a little weird to write in a cafe, since that's what everybody expects that you're doing, and what many people seem to be doing.

    Eddie Murphy Quits the Oscars!

The current LA scuttlebutt centers on names like Neil Patrick Harris or Ricky Gervais, or even on bringing back Hugh Jackman. I strongly approve of the first two; Hollywood is no doubt still mad at Gervais for his Golden Globes comments, as they can't take a real joke. And I enjoyed Jackman's...

Writers...What is your ideal writing setting?

I always sit in a cafe with a laptop, which has been my procedure for a long time. (When I was a freelance writer, even had a setup which was a Palm Pilot with a folding keyboard -- nothing was more portable.) But I've cranked out many, many scripts and treatments this way. Access to caffeine...

One thing I hate about film festivals.

That totally depends on the distribution deal. The feature I wrote, for example, was simply purchased outright by the direct-to-video distributor for amount that basically covered the budget. "Units sold" has no impact on the filmmaker's profit. The print run was a finite amount, and they...

One thing I hate about film festivals.

Media sales have long been shameless. Some of you may recall that when the music industry switched to CDs, their manufacturing costs dropped -- by a lot -- yet their sales prices doubled. It was such a scam that there was a successful class action suit against the recording industry's...

    Man who "made" Paris Hilton

Fascinating. His approach reminds me of Malcolm McClaren's.

Anyone else think modern horror movies are overlit?

I did that shot all in FCP. It was easy. AE, will of course, do a fantastic job. I got tired of pushing up against the limits of FCP, which although it can do quite a lot in the effects department, especially with plug-ins, it's typically much more time-consuming and labor-intensive than to...

    Grimm

I caught the 2nd ep of "Once Upon a Time," and while not badly written and acted, it simply lacks...wit. It's got no edge. Far too "Desperate Housewives," and not enough "Buffy."

One thing I hate about film festivals.

The best way to attend a film festival: Take the week off, and buy a festival all-access pass. If the festival is a good one, it's well worth the time and expense. Movie vacation!
