what is the best way to become a director?

hello, I'm a screenwriter but I would love to know how to make the transition from, Screenwriter-Director.
ANY TIPS

Gotta make a movie...find a crew and a cast and direct one of your own scripts. Rinse, repeat...

It might be easier to start with a short and build from there.

Are you wondering how to direct a movie?

I have only one tip. It's the same as Uranium City's:

You direct a movie.

Should be even easier for you because you are a screenwriter.
Write a script you know can pull off as a director; parts for
people you know will act in it and locations you know you
can use.

Don't have a camera? You've read posts here where that's
discussed. Don't have audio equipment? You've read posts
here where that's discussed. Don't have editing software?
You've read posts here where that's discussed.

You know your first few attempts will be pretty poor so start
with something simple and add a little challenge with each
subsequent movie. If you make one short movie each month
for one year at the end of 2010 you will have 12 finished
short films. I bet the last four or five will be pretty good.

But that transition can be made in a few weeks. Get started!

Since you're a screenwriter you have a huge benefit. Many members here want to be directors but have no idea of what to shoot. Take that screenplay, team up with a producer, and shoot it.

can be nothing but time, or every scent on you.

for example, you could only use props you all ready own, locations that your friends, family, or you own, and borrow a camera and mic.

or you could buy everything new, pee on it, then buy it all over again, and pay a few hundred for talentless actors, dump them, get good actors.

its really more about, how much do you want to spend?

A music video would be an extremely worthwhile place to dive in, especially if it involves a simple narrative story that can be told without dialog intercut with footage of the band playing. You obviously feel you must be somewhat capable of directing it or you'd have already told him no...so dive in!

Thanks, for the tips, A friend of mine has asked if i can direct his music video, do you think that will be a good start? It will be around 4-5 mins long.
I'll ask YOU a question to ask yourself:

Do YOU think directing a music video will help you make
the transition from screenwriter to director? Or would
NOT directing be better for that transition?
how much do you think it costs to shoot a short or feature?
A short can be made for no money at all. Not a single
penny spent.
A short can be made for just the cost of a "thank you"
meal and pint for cast and crew.
A short can be made for £6 or £600 or £60,000 and
everything in between.

Features have been made for under £600 and well over
that.

I love tongoll's question: How much do you want to spend?
Ask yourself that question, come up with a number and
then budget your movie. Get started!

Well, I have about 2000 in savings left but, I think ill be able to shoot the music video for virtually nothing. Me and a friend are going to go halfs on this 20 minute short called "Steak Knife" its about a group of students who go on a trip and they have to escape a zombie attack.

Being a Screenwriter you have a strong idea (I'm assuming) of how a story should be told, especially in the moving-picture medium.

Now all you need to do is get some equipment and some actors, call yourself the Director, and shoot a film. It's that simple.

Start small. Shoot a short. Maybe read a few books on directing.

Good luck.
