Hey folks, I'm looking foreword to getting involved!

I'm a wedding and portrait photographer from the washington, DC area. I have a lot of history in photography, but filmmaking has always been my unexplored passion. After a recent catastrophe with one of my 5D camera bodies, I needed to upgrade, so I went ahead with the 5D Mk 2. So, now with an HD video camera, and a pre-existing wealth of professional lenses (still lenses, granted, but good lenses nonetheless), I am hoping to start finally exploring the industry. Perhaps it will lead to wedding cinematography, or maybe it'll take me somewhere else, or nowhere at all. Who knows.

In any case, I'm here mostly because I'm largely ignorant to the filmmaking process. I have a knack for composing a shot, thanks to my history in photography, and I'm generally a people connector, pulling ideas and tasks together. I also have a fairly good foundation of friends and colleagues who are excellent at various filmmaking tasks that I am not, however still, the gritty intricacies of filmmaking is very mysterious to me. So, in the interest of not wasting too much time or money, I'm hoping to learn from some folks around here.

Hopefully I will be able to learn a lot from this community, and perhaps in time offer some support to others. :)

Thanks for the reminder. I'm a member on a lot of forums of varying topics, and that's a pretty standard request, which I try to honor as best I can. The only time I sometimes trip up is when I don't have the language to search successfully, or if the forums use a slew of slang and abbreviations that I haven't picked up yet. I'll try my very best to keep from asking redundant questions though.

Also, if you have a minute, would you mind teaching me everything you know about audio? Thanks. :)
 
Hi! It's nice to have someone from my (relatively) neck of woods join the board. I hope you stay active in your pursuit of filmmaking, and I think it's terrific that you come from a photography background. That's a major plus, in my opinion.

Richmond isn't too far from here. About an hour and a half. I love the downtown Richmond area. It has a lot of visual character. Sort of like Annapolis, or Old Town Alexandria, but with just enough dereliction to make it feel real and honest, unlike the aforementioned locations, which feel weirdly candy-coated.

I've always wanted an excuse to shoot down there. But alas, my customers are up here.
 
An hour and a half?! Sure, if you're driving in the middle of the night. When I first moved here, I commuted every day, from Alexandria to Richmond. Did that for a month. 2 hours was average.

I've never been to Annapolis, but I know what you mean about Old Town Alexandria. Really cool place to get lunch, and check out old-timey buildings. But not exactly the kind of place to try and paint the town red at night.

Being a relatively small city, Richmond's got a very active artistic community, and it's pretty much because we've got VCU (a college known for a strong arts program).

I bartend at The Jefferson. Big hotel. Five-star, five-diamond. We host tons of weddings, the likes of which are about as big-budget as you can imagine. If you're ever looking for an excuse to shoot in Richmond, finding a way into shooting weddings at The Jefferson would be a significant career-boost, I would think. I'm just a bartender, so I don't have any clue how you would get an in here, but if you can do it, we host big-money weddings almost every week, often more than one per week.

Does anyone know if there is a master list somewhere of common equipment and equipment terminology?
