SKYFALL: the 23rd James Bond adventure

SKYFALL will be in cinemas in the UK from October 26th, 2012 and in US theatres from November 9th.

I like both the countdown clock (I'm sure there's a direct tie-in with some plot point of the film) and the little periodically updated "Where's Waldo"... er... I mean "Where's Jimbo" Agent Locator mappie thingie widget in the right column.
Nice.

I hope its better than Quantum of Solace.
Meeee toooo.
WTH did they spend that last $50million on? :grumpy:

Really looking forward to this one. Might even spring for tix at first-run theater.

Love the Bond... even though he's given up his martinis. Booo. :(

This trailer looks great. I'd say Bond comes in 2nd to Indy, in the contest of which popular series most affected my childhood. So, yeah I look forward to this one! :D

Steve, as a bartender in a 5-star, 5-diamond hotel, I feel like I have the knowledge to gladly inform you that the vesper is basically a martini. A little more classy, actually. :D

The only thing that bothers me, with the Daniel Craig Bond movies, is the lack of proper Bond music. I'll continue to turn a blind-eye, for now, but somebody needs to address this issue.

I will probably be in the minority when I say this, but I have hated James Bond my entire life. That is until Daniel Craig came along and they re-did Casino Royale. I loved that movie and it's one of the movies I will watch when I want to watch a movie but nothing is really standing out to me. I hated Quantum of Solace, though, and will only watch it one more time, the week before Skyfall comes out. I have watched QoS a few times and unlike some movies that do better with me a second time around, that movie gets worse and upsets me even more. The little I have seen of Skyfall, I have high hopes it will be more like CR instead of the dragfest that was QoS.

Yep.
Eh, sorta.

Technically while they are both cocktails they are two distinct variants within the gin based cocktails category, sorta like lemons and oranges are both citrus fruits but distinctly different within the citrus fruit family.

And for tonight's libation education...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martini_(cocktail)

"The martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. Over the years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages. H. L. Mencken called the martini "the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet" and E. B. White called it "the elixir of quietude".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesper_(cocktail)

"The Vesper or Vesper Martini is a cocktail that was originally made of gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet."

http://cocktails.about.com/od/ginrecipes/r/vesper_cocktail.htm

"Ingredients:
  • 3 measures of Gordon's Gin
  • 1 measure of vodka
  • 1/2 measure Kina Lillet
  • lemon peel for garnish
Preparation:

The Vesper according to Ian Fleming and James Bond:
"Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?"
-Casino Royale, Chapter 7"

Vesper

Hmmm. I'm guessing I could do without the gin though. I should try it sometime.

Take heart, Steve. The story I heard was that he's not giving his vodka martinis up, only expanding his palate...to include a new sponsor's beer. Hope so anyway.

I didn't care much for Quantum of Solace either at first. But when I rewatched it recently I warmed up to it more. Ebert or some other critic wrote that Spectre's trying to take control of the water supply is a bit lame. Yeah, I guess it's not very sexy. But really, it's not such a bad motivation to invent for an evil organization who (I was going to rewrite who to be which, but, what is Spectre? Is it a corporation? Well, since the US Supreme Court decided corporations are people I suppose I should leave it as who?) wants to ensure it has control and power for itself in the future by extorting a thirsty world for water it owns. Just the other night, a talking head on TV, I can't say which one or vouch for his/her claim, but he/she mentioned that a real world evil organization, the P.R.C., is damming rivers that people in Southeast Asia depend upon, and for what reason? For future control over those people. Well, we're also told that China is looking at some rough times ahead when it comes to keeping itself in adequate water. Still, I agree, not a very sexy plot point.

By the way, I don't want to be indelicate, but I also recently rewatched Casion Royale and I'm left with a question. I guess I missed it the first times around. Or, perhaps I didn't want to acknowledge it, because, yow. Are we to understand that James lost his testicles as a result of the torture?

I guess y'all hadn't heard, then : Linkage :mope:

That's what I was talkin' about.

I did a little while back. I also heard they paid about 30 million for the placement but i dont know if it's true.
Anyone know?

Apparently, Bond does drink beer in the books. Not having read any, i was aghast when i heard the news.

You guys are bringing more to the table than just doe eyes, right?

Are you noting that this very discussion and analysis of martinis vs. vespers vs. cocktails vs. Heinekens and all the other cross promotional gobbledygook in the franchise is exactly what their producers want, right?

And you're taking notes to try this same approach, at some level, with your own future indie film projects, where we have to do ten times the work with one-tenth the resources, right?

Yeah, I thought you were.
Ya'll 're smart thattaways. ;)

Who can identify the AR-type and pistol in that clip?

http://drinkingmadeeasy.com/booze-in-the-news/heineken-replace-martini-bond-film/

"Heineken recently announced at the Heineken NV’s National Brand Expo that they will be partnering with the James Bond franchise for their new film- Skyfall. The exclusive $40 million dollar deal will feature cross promotions with Bond and Heineken for the normal stuff like advertisements, packaging, commercials, etc. However, the real shocker is that Heineken will also make an appearance in the film in lieu of the Bond martini. This is a bold move indeed since the “shaken, not stirred” martini has been a significant icon throughout the James Bond franchise."

Since there's no further mention of it between James & Vesper's subsequent pillow talk and that Le Chiffre kinda got his nut-busting monkey-fist thing interrupted by a round to the skull I'm gonna vote that he's still carrying a pair.

Too late right now to formulate a long response, but this is more akin to a "Han shot first!" moment... for me, at least.

Bond's smoking habits can vary, his cars can vary, his gun can choices vary, his gadgets, his personality (and physicality) can change... he's married... he's widowed.... he's rebooted.

You just don't mess with the man's iconic drink!

That's awesome. The more you know... 'cause you never know when that might come in handy.

Cool. But what do you think of the part when Vesper comes to visit him when he's convalescing and she says something like: "Oh, James, you're still more man than any man I've ever met!" Something like that. That's what struck me and got the clockwork turning. 'Cause where does that come from? What's she talking about?

Edit: I had to look it up.

Getting emotional, she says to him: "I just want you to know that if all that was left of you was your smile and your little finger, you'd still be more of a man than anyone I've ever met."

Wow. Ooooookay. Cocktails and castrating knots - I've been lean-ed a thing or two this morning.

Anyway... I wasn't a big bond fan either. Roger Moore was too boring and Timothy Dalton was a crime against humanity. Pierce Brosnan was the guy who got me into the franchise and GoldenEye is one of my all time favorites (the movie and the game on the N64 - sweetness!!).

Craig took a while to grow on me and he finally has. I too look forward to Skyfall. Plus I may be in the minority here on this but I did like Quantum of Solace...but then again I was in the minority in knowing the details about cocktails and tails, err I mean ties, err I mean knots that bust...things. :)

I am psyched about SKYFALL in a big way!

I agree.

Watching "Casino Royal" it really bothered me. But at the very end when
he finally said, "Bond. James Bond." and the Monty Norman theme kicked
in I forgave them. That was an "origin" story and he wasn't "James Bond"
until that moment. Like you, I was willing to turn a blind eye during
"Quantum of Solace" because it was such an immediate sequel.

But now I want to see the standard "Bond movie" trappings. I want the
Norman and Barry score, I want Q branch, I want the gun barrel opening.

I'm a huge Bond-fan and I can't wait to see this movie! Unfortunately I wasn't really impressed with the teaser trailer. Let's hope the real trailer is a lot cooler.

The Bond Everyone Has To Look Up said:
Lazenby told the website that the filmmakers are breaking a sacred tradition, then took a swipe at the beer. "It's not the best beer out there, either."

You tell 'em, George!
smiley_nyd.gif

Though I love his lone "Bond" venture, Lazenby has an asterisks by his name.

I don't think it's such a sin for Bond to drink beer, though I do appreciate your perspective on that, Steve. :) I do think, however, that if he were to drink beer, it would definitely NOT be Heineken. I take him for more of a Sam Smith's Nut Brown kind of guy. If you gotta give the man a recognizable name-brand, for queen's sake, it should at least be a Bass!

Well, how about something like Guinness? Yeah, I don't want to burn my bridges with Heineken (Heheh) but the one time I tried it I didn't love it. Not that I love Guinness either. At least it's a U.K. beer.

But Heineken is footing the bill, so...

And they do have what looks like a nice website. Check out the Who We Are thingie and the short films. Maybe somebody here could be making one of those for Heineken. ;)
