watch MOVIE TRAILER - BROKEN ($8000 Action Short - 100 Vfx Shots) DVX100a

:welcome:

Please don't double post. I've removed your duplicate thread. Thanks!

Lokks pretty impressive, :)

I love all the clips on the webdocs page, btw. Almost noone does that, and it's very interesting to look at.

How long is the short?

...I have a DVX 100a and after looking at your trailer I am sooooo! glad I got this camera! What video mode did you shoot in? since the camera shoots in so many modes....

Your trailer looks great!

The trailer is halfway through loading and so far it looks great. I think i have underestimated the quality of the dvx (along with a good dop). All this talk about hd makes me wonder about the quality of standard minidv. Surely footage taken with a dvx is good enough to view on a reasonably large plasma tv for example but at what size would it be rendered useless or unacceptable?

It's all relative of course. Some will say it sucks when others will be blown away :D. The DVX has been blown up to 35mm film multiple times though and all reports seem to have been good (I can't say since I have never seen a DVX->film transfer).

It's definitely a great camera though. There is so much more to image quality than resolution! The DVX is a great example of this. Personally, I like the image from the DVX better than the current crop of HDV cameras. The lack of true 16:9 irks me at times, but I like the image too much to change cameras at this point (until something truly better in image quality comes out).

Terrirfic trailer, and the VFX docs were interesting to watch. Somethings I've seen that originate on DVX are so impressive...but this takes the cake for me.

Thanks for the kind words man! We worked hard on it and it's cool to see people enjoying it.

Wow...looks cool.

What did you use for your color correction and sfx?

Thanks for the kind words! The filter packages I used were Magic Bullet, G Film (www.nattress.com), Stib's Simple Levels and a FCP's color corrector. I found that Simple Levels helped me crush the black in a way that the entire image wasn't affected. I also used garbage matte to cut out sections of the frame and color correct them individually. The key is good lighting and having a design in mind before going into post. I did a lot of experimenting and layering techinques in FCP to get the look. Sometimes I look back and forget how I got there. Just play around ALOT with the tools.

As far as compositing, Apple's SHAKE is the mac daddy of composting software. There is a reason Lord of the Rings and the Matrix used this software package. It is built to do one thing and one thing alone...COMPOSITE!! The ease of use and power of the software is crazy. It is a node based system while After Effects is a timeline based system, which is cool for editing but slows you down for VFX work. Anyone who has ever used a 3D program like Maya or a high end GFX box like Inferno can tell you node editing is the way to go. BTW, we did ALL the over 100 VFX shots in about two and half weeks, working nights and weekends, this would of been impossible in After Effects. Shake allows you to render one project and keep working on another. Bottomline, SHAKE is the way to go! Hope I didn't go off too much. ; )

Hope that helped!

So how exactly was the $8000 budget allocated? Shake alone is like $3000, and I'm sure all the plug-ins plus other neccessary programs(FCP, PS) added up another few thousand. Was the software & hardware not included in the budget? Was $8000 just the shooting budget?

We used a evaluation copy of SHAKE. You get a free copy when you buy a copy for 30 days of Apple's SHAKE training book. All other effects were done on off hours at my VFX supervisor's job. I also own my own post facility so FCP and PS was something we had for a while. The $8000 included all production costs, crew, camera rental, location, food, lights, stock, etc. Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for the kind words. MiniDV is at a resolution of 720x480, HD 1080i is at a 2K res. MiniDV would suffer a bit at that res. ; )
