Movie Theatre Etiquette

I am guilty of breaking number 7

But overall, its pretty friendly where I go see movies, except every now and then #2 and #5 seem to get annoying.

This is the definitive guide from the Wittertainment podcast:

EDIT: I give up trying to post this video from my iPad. I'll go it later *angry smiley*

I just saw this article on imdb's hit list and thought id post it here. It's amusing and mostly right. Other than point 8, which im not sure i agree with, the rest can drive me nuts in a theatre.

For most, it should be an amusing read and for those who do happen to have any of those habits... STOP! For the love of god, stop!

http://www.ifc.com/news/2011/08/movie-theater-etiquette-manifesto.php

I have to say... I Disagree with number 7. I paid too much money to enter into a theatre and so I want to sit in a seat that gives me the best view. If someone happens to be directly behind me or in front of me then that is less then ideal but the reality is we are all paying money to see a movie and I want the best view (in my opinion) for that money.

But other then that its a solid list :)

I would never consider throwing crap on the floor of a theater. Doubly so since I frequent small indie theaters. People have to clean that stuff up, and it's bad enough that they show Rocky Horror sometimes! I disagree that it is socially acceptable to act like a pig. It never is. Ever.

I'm pretty good with the rest of the list. I try to catch big movies at early matinees a few weeks after they come out, so a nearly empty theater keeps seating issues to a minimum! And if I'm guilty of 1, I have a pretty practiced whisper and DO see a lot of Nicholas Cage movies (mostly for that reason)!

Yeah, why do you have to be respectful of where you sit? If you want a seat take it or someone else will. Unless you have high hair, then I can see it. :)

I agree

I know what you mean but the trouble is when ur in some older theatre where the seat levels are not much higher than the ones in front, it can become a little problematic. I understand it in that case. And ofcourse, high hair

admittably I have curly hair... like natural Fro hair so hahaha in an older theatre I would be that guy with high hair, Luckily I keep it cut shorter!

I've walked out of a screening once. A group of teenagers were so laud...They were probably thinking they were having a barbeque, instead of watching a film in the cinema.
I went straight to the manager. They gave me two tickets for any screening. Problem solved.
(This was in London:))

When I was in planet of the apes some guy a few seats down had his young son with him. Every single line that was subtitled the kid says in a loud whisper "what did he say?" Then the dad would read it to him. Annoyed me to no end.

Seriously, I know the film isn't R-rated and it's not a foreign film. But come on. If your kid can't read maybe you should stick with PG.

Also, I literally saw a 2 year old in that theater. Who brings a two year old to an action movie?

Yep, I agree with this list, wholeheartedly.

Except for the one about throwing trash on the floor. That's just disrespectful of the people who work there. I'll admit that if I accidentally make a mess, I'm not going to clean it, but I do genuinely try (and generally do) leave my space clean. As for me not being responsible for cleaning an accidental mess, well that's the same for any business -- if a patron in my bar spills a drink, I clean it, not him/her, cuz they are my guest. But if a patron threw a drink on the floor, they get the door.

The other exception to the rule of no talking is pretty much any horror movie, especially if you're in an "urban" theater. Honestly, the best way to watch a horror movie is on a Friday night, in a ghetto-ass theater. So much fun.

Tried and failed to post this earlier. Couple of hours later I have my fingers crossed that I'll succeed. I like your list Ernest but as has been mentioned there are one or two things that I'd go up against...

This however... (and it's British ;) )

Having worked in a cinema I can say without any hesitation that number eight just makes you an asshole.

Not my list (i know what u mean) but i agree with all the points except 8.
My list would be 200 pages long :P

Much more fun to watch the vid u posted instead of reading the article i linked

I recommend everyone watch it!

Interesting that #6 and #7 are at odds with each other. I often
break #7 because so many people break #6.

Of course if we’re talking about a crowded theater, that’s
different - but #6 addresses that.

It’s interesting to me that this author sees it as “a dick move”
to fake save a seat but demands we throw our trash on the floor
for some minimum wage earning person to pick up. I’m glad to see
every one posting here disagrees with #8.

I too disagree with 8. Just because others do it don't make it right.

I do appreciate the not sitting in front of people rule. sure on premiere night there won't be an empty seat, but every other time if someone is there first, a seat or two over won't destroy the "best view possible". I am 6'5" tall. My knees generally touch the seat in front of me, I can't help it. Last movie I saw there was a 7 year old who kept knocking his seat back into my legs because it wouldn't lean back, I was ready to punt him across a few ailes after 10 minutes of it.

LOL yeah if there's 4 people don't sit right in front of someone ;) but packed house, grab what you want!

I can't believe the trash on the floor rule. I hate sticky messy movie floors. Maybe he doesn't like people getting up during the movie? Still... it's easy to put it on the floor and throw it away at the end. I mean seriously.

Exactly. That's what we do. Im not getting up during the movie to dispose of my trash. I usually dont eat or drink during movies but when i do, i leave it in the cupholder or on the floor and then throw it away on the way out.

Another one should be not burping or farting during the movie.

Then again with all the 3D these days and 2D versions only being shown in smaller cinemas, I haven't been to the theatre since Avatar. When I used to go every other week I would go to the early morning showings during the weekday where I'd have the entire cinema to myself.
