Miley Cyrus goes raunchy.

She seems to be trying to ditch her Hanna Montana legacy, as the clean girl next door. I don't know, but, as a business proposition, she may be better off trying to work on that reputation, just like Shirley Temple and/or Taylor Swift, because she already has goodwill as that kinda person.

Anyone?

I wish people would quit giving her attention and that she'd just produce good work able to stand up on it's own merit = true talent, vs. talent for pumping an proletariat fan base.

I agree with Ray; change your image with talent.

Remember Christopher Reeve? He went from being Superman, protecting truth, justice and the American way to a being murderous homosexual in "Deathtrap."

Hmmm, good point about Christopher Reeve. Despite "Deathtrap", he was still seen by many as a clean-cut all-American boy, so there may be a double standard of some kind.

This is not a boring discussion, because I'm trying to figure out if Miley is engaging in a good business decision.

Good points above...

Society-wise: given that many teens look up to her, see her as a role model I view her VMA performance as a disgrace... Does she care about anyone but herself? Millions of teens and pre-teens watch that show...

I think it is a purely business decision on her part. She's trying to one-up Lady Gaga in controversiality; there's no such thing as bad publicity.

The fact that she's a role model from her Hanna Montana days makes it very disgraceful.

My (and my families) choice, just walk away.

But that's a crowded market, with Lady Gaga, Madonna, Lindsay Lohan. But, aside from Taylor Swift, who caters to the country market, there's no one with the clean Hanna-Montana image. That's why I'm saying she made a business mistake, forsaking an open market, which she has, for a crowded one.

Bringing her up, negative or positive, people are going to want to watch and her fame is going to grow. If people say it's disgraceful, controversial, and upsetting, people are going to want to watch it! The only thing complaining will do is give her more attention.

Talk about her and she'll stay, stop talking about her, and she'll go away.

Uptight much?

WARNING: Prince performing at the 1991 MTV Music Video Awards wearing A**less Pants

Or maybe it's the same old same old this.

In sexual politics the view of women as either Madonnas or whores limits women's sexual expression, offering two mutually exclusive ways to construct a sexual identity.[4] The duality implies that women must assume subservient roles, either as madonnas to be protected or as whores to be punished by men.

I guess it works at the vmas, because I still haven't seen the damn performance and it's not available anywhere online except for cut up clips.

So I ended up watching her music video instead, which was actually really good. before this controversy i couldn't name a single one of her songs, now I know the chorus about dancing with molly so her fiasco seems to have been well played

Richy, that proves my point - if all other female performers are going raunchy, then there may be an oversupply, in which case she should go to the Hanna Montana clean, goody-goody market.

I've no problems with raunchy, because I like living in a free country.

It's up to her if that's the image she wants to portray (Although I doubt it was solely her idea, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears were marketed in the same way after they finished with Disney).

I personally do think though, that since she still has a large following of children, most of whom would have been watching the VMAs, she should feel a bit more responsibility to be sensible and leave this stuff up to the Lady Gagas of the music industry. I'm not being conservative, I'm just considering with all of this current unpleasantness around stuff like 'sexting', teenagers becoming sexually active at really young ages, watching porn in school ETC., it wouldn't do any harm for celebrities with a young following to be a bit more clean, like people like Taylor Swift or One Direction.

her song is about doing drugs and partying all night, but all anyone is concerned about is how she was dancing sexy and sticking her tongue out. lol

Aspiring Mogul, you might be right. But I would think that there will always be plenty of room for performers to be rau--- sexuality liberated grown ups.

Yeah, I don't understand the drama. She's rebelling, young people are known to do that. By definition, her behavior wouldn't be rebellious if she didn't ruffle a few feathers.

I'll be happy for her if she's able to make it out of child stardom, without going completely nutso. If this is how she needs to cope with being known as a poster child for sweet innocence, then I say more power to her.

I'm more bothered by the fact that the performance was boring. o_O
