Horror, Fantasy & Sci-Fi

Why does it seem to me that whenever I search for indie films, I find endless lists of dramas that are depressing and little more.

I'm an older type in this business (I'm 44) and when I was younger, there were horror, sci-fi and fantasy films being made all over the place. Zombies and creatures from outer space were everywhere. But now all these years later, when actually creating those types of special effects would be easier and less expensive than ever before and yet... I see very few films of that type anywhere... what's the deal?

You may have guessed from what I just wrote that I'm a special effects guy, of the old school variety. I still work with rubber and plastic, wood and metal to create my wares. I specialize in stop motion animation and live action creature effects. The technology of today allows me to be able to create Harryhausen style special effects much more realistically than he was ever able to and on a tight budget. But where are the people making the kinds of films I love today aside from in Hollywood?

The independent film world seems to have chosen this world of dark and depressing dramas to make... and NOTHING ELSE. No cartoons, no monster flicks, no space battles... maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places but, all I'm seeing in the indie world are about 'Poor Suzie and her battle against drug addiction, an evil boss, a boyfriend who cheats on her and the death of her beloved dog Puffy'.

I used to pay money to get The Independent Film Channel but, I gave that up years ago because I got sick of watching films about people on the verge of suicide... which made me want to commit suicide after the movie was over. Where are the people who want to make cool, fun and entertaining movies? I love deep movies too, I made one of them myself - but geee wizzz! can we lighten things up with a cool zombie slasher film every now and then?

When I'm suffering from boredom, I don't want to watch a film about someone suffering from boredom, I wanna watch something FUN and sadly, the independent film world has very nearly forgotten what fun is... at least that is what I find in the places I've looked. Are there producers looking to make fun films and are they on websites I just haven't found yet? Or am I correct that almost every indie film is about Suzie, her hard life and her dead dog?

For me it's because its hard to write a good sci-fi/fantasy script and do it well without making it look corny.

While there's certainly no shortage of zombie flicks, a real resurgence in sci-fi & fantasy would be great.

I was thrilled to get about 45 seconds of claymation into something I did a while back. I've also got a neat sci-fi script almost ready to go, heavily influenced by Gerry Anderson. That's not going to be started this year (or next), but it's something I'll regret not making if I die first.

Btw, look up member FC Rabbath here or on YouTube. He's a fantastic lo-budget fantasy filmmaker, that often gets me thinking about how I can improve on my own ideas.

Harryhausen style special effects

He's the man.

The Cinesauras exhibit just finished nearby, a few months back. All kinds of crazy miniatures were there, including the Brontosauraus from King Kong. Harryhausen had all kinds of exhibits for him there, too.

But where are the people making the kinds of films I love today aside from in Hollywood?

They're out there - they are just afraid to ask for help, and assume that "things" will just cost too much. Quite silly, really.

You have a website, btw?

I think you're looking in the wrong places. Monsters and Zombies rule the indie fests here in the Midwest, at least the ones I attend. And they appear quite often in the screening rooms here at Indietalk. If anything, I'd say I notice a definite backlash against the very dramas you speak of.

Check out member M1chae1's many projects with New England's Scorpio Film Releasing...

Sure, the Independent Film Channel is full of that kind of film. But Netflix has plenty of the other.

There's another forum that I hang out at with Christian Viel, who makes the RECON 2020 movies. Between, him and I, we have 8 sci-fi/horror features. Then, throw in Sonnyboo, who co-directed HORRORS OF WAR. What's funny, is that people at that place bitch about why there are so many sci-fi/horror movies and not enough drama! Ha ha!

Indietalk seems fairly well rounded with different genres. Go to the Screening forum and you will find all sorts of zombie, horror, sci-fi stuff. My stuff probably is a little corny. As L.I.F.E. points out, it's hard to do, when you pay for it yourself. I love it, though.

Space battles? Monsters? You haven't seen my trailers:

I've really had a hard time over the years, securing a makeup guy for any of my shoots, even the paying ones. My original monster creator, for EXILE, dropped out after more than 6 months of planning. My less experienced friend, Scott Lichfield, filled in with less than 3 months till shooting. The monster in my profile pic was never completed, but we worked with what we had. The eyes and slime were frame by frame animated in Photoshop. Scott also did my werewolf makeup, for an 80's short. I've often come up with my own makeup for several undead characters, when it was a last resort. The next movie, it looks like I will have a full time makeup guy.

My recent short, SCREAMIN' DEMON has some decent makeup, at the end.

Anyway, I've also made a slew of horror/fantasy shorts shot on 8mm and 16mm, with a lot of practical effects. Some pics:

TWO BROTHERS
Melting Man

DESTINY'S ROAD: I wanted to do this effect, where I ripped my face off. This had a couple women screaming, at the premiere.

Face rip

Face rip 2

Lighting head on fire

In flames

METAMORPHOSIS werewolf flick.

Transformation

Werewolf teeth

Roommate ripped up

Werewolf

Werewolf shot

Of course, the best friend doesn't notice the scratch on his arm. Infection has begun.

Bloodline continues

That was not my first shapeshifting movie. I actually turned into a German Shepherd, in WEREDOG.

About to change

Dog legs!

Fangs

At the end of the movie, I become a "seeing eye" dog, for a friend!

Seeing eye dog

SEEK AND DESTROY:

Blaster rifle

I would actually scratch the film to get laser effects. Here's me getting shot in the face:

Blast to face

Smokey face

Bad guy blown up

I made 2 giant lizard movies - THE DRAGON:

Dragon in garage

...and THEO THE SAURUS:

Theo closeup

Theo attacks a guy

THE GRABBER. It's about a hand, who wants his diamond ring back. I made him out of clay and latex. Later, that summer of 87', EVIL DEAD 2 came out. I was both elated and angry. Their hand even squeeked, like mine.

Faceoff with the hand

Hand jumps!

On my face

Hand choking me

Eventually, I flushed that sonbich down the toilet:

Hand flushed

Shadowplay, from DR. FRINGER:

Garden tool massacre!

J.MICHAEL SLOAN: AGENT 1040A:

Cardboard gun scope

Rocket man takes off

Airplane car!

Wow, killer trip down hardcore DIY indie filmmaking lane Scoopic.
That s8 look is music to the eyes.

-Thanks-

For me the opposite is happenning . Wherever I go I find only sci-fiction scripts and saving the world scripts. I cannot find any good old drama scripts like a Roman Holiday
padma

Thanks, Buddy! Got a bunch more of those. The 16mm look is even more cool, to me.

Whoa! I just assumed that I would get email notifications to my post here and didn't realize so many of you responded! Thanks!

And now I'm happy to say that I've got something of my own work that fits this subject... the trailer for a film I've been working on just got released and I can finally show it to people. :)

I give you the trailer for 'Sinbad The Fifth Voyage' the first film in years to utilize stop motion animated creature effects - in the great and continuing tradition of Ray Harryhausen...

Still working on my first film, buts its sci-fi (space battle too boot) although I'm trying to avoid CGI (a bit of AF but no jar jar binks antics).

I know of a few other sci-fi/fantasy/horror movies being made here in ottawa, actually I haven't seen much else. But as was pointed out, its hard to make such a movie on a low budget without it looking corny/silly/so-bad it just bad, etc.

We are out there and we are making the movies, but Drama are mainstream in Indie world because they are one thing.... CHEAP. Actors wearing whatever they showed up with + whatever location you can get (where you work or live) and tada, Drama Film....

Like it or not sci-fi and fantasy no matter how cheap you go will always cost more $$$ and time than a simple drama movie with crying 20ish year olds...

Wow!!! This looks fantastic!

You should hook up with David Rosler, who did some effects for me. He knows Ray Harryhausen (who just turned 92) and just directed, did FX, etc. for FIRST MEN IN THE MOON 3D Check out the swordfight, which may be stop motion.

By the way, THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD is one of my favorites. Cyclops, 2 headed Roc, Dragon, Skeleton, etc.

Sorry for the VERY belated response, I forgot to subscribe to this thread. (even though I started it, how stupid is that?)

Funny you should mention David Rosler's film, I know him from another website and we've actually spoken a lot in this past month. His film has all CGI special effects so far as I know and that's really not my thing. I feel that if you need to do effects that need to look real on a budget, then the best option is to go with shooting real objects.

Someone very early in this thread said that the lack of creature effects in indie films was largely due to the difficulty of getting them to look real and not 'corny'. I'm disappointed by that view because I would have expected that in the past decade the opposite would be true because the materials and technology that will help make them look much more realistic on a lower budget has VASTLY improved!

Fortunately the producer of the Sinbad film I'm currently working on sees that possibility and is taking advantage of it. :)

I have an offering as well... it's a short for the film racing grand prix:

http://yafiunderground.com/Video/scavengers.2.sm.mov

This has been edited beyond the competition substantially. I've even fixed the nasty reverb and the color correction issues after this release. We did it because we couldn't when we started ;)

Here's the 48 hour before that:

http://yafiunderground.com/Video/bog-festival-ws.mov

again time taken after the competition to fix stuff and improve what we saw as failings during the competition so we could learn from our mistakes.

Personally I never really liked zombie movies much and there seems to be way too many made. I think because it is a fairly low budget thing to do. I would rather see some more sci fi pictures that are not zombie or horor. I never really liked horor films though so go figure. I just think it is real hard to compete with the tons of zombie movies made and how do you get something original. Much better to come up with something more original in orgins. My thoughts. As far as horor I do like a few horor flicks but not much. I am more a fan of action and comedy. Add action and comedy to sci fi and I like it. Add humor to zombie flicks like Zombieland and Shawn of the Dead did and I like it. I am not much a fan of drama eaither. Case in point I would rather watch SG1 than SGU.

Hey guys!

I've working on a fantasy film for a few years now and recently completed it.
Just wanted to let show you guys it and if you like it any support is very
much appreciated.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLqbbK_7CVI
