Government-- I love you, I love you not.

Right wing gun nut here so.. USA ALL THE WAY!!

when I read this..

The UKFC was set up ten years ag as a non-departmental QUANGO, answerable to, but separate from parliament. Its remit was to "stimulate a competitive, successful and vibrant UK film industry and culture, and to promote the widest possible enjoyment and understanding of cinema throughout the nations and regions of the UK, [with] a mandate spanning cultural, social and economic priorities".

I realize what is WRONG with socialism. In my mind the government has no place whatsoever in "promoting" enjoyment of ANYTHING, that your job as a HUMAN BEING. I believe that the government should allow me the OPPORTUNITY to find happiness, but not assure that I HAVE happiness.

Why should someone who is def and blind have to pay for you to make a movie? If you spending tax money, your spending that blinds TAXPAYERS money..

That said, you get the government you deserve. Soon, US will be another socialist heaven.

That's a shame. :(

That kind of funding is always an easy target, though, when fudging new budgets. We have the same thing going on with our PBS networks, except they've managed to limp onwards for a bit.

National Endowment for the Arts is another program that gets attacked, too. Usually after some artist creates something that someone else finds personally objectionable.

Still, at least we can fund killing people from halfway around the world.

(CUE Team America theme song)

For what it's worth, the New Zealand Film Council (I've forgotten the official name) was going to be shut down, over a decade ago, 'cos politicians were railing against wastes of public money. They decided to get involved with one last project before shutting down. I forget the name of the film. Had some midgets in it, and some ugly dude obssessed with jewelry. At any rate, it turned out okay and public opinion had a huge shift back, and they're still chuggin' along.

I'm ramblin'.

I hear you both.

It's a shame "Democracy" didn't rule in the last election, and won't begin to. A split parliament fills me with unending doubt. They've hit me hard.

I've said in previous posts, "It's a fighters fight". Well, here's to Ali, I'm swingin' with you.

There are two sides to everything.

I suggest this: The government recieves enough of money under the table...any government no matter what policital party they are involved with. They make enough, they take enough and half don't pay their taxes (John Kerry, Geithner to name two of many many).
Why don't the folks that cut costs on various things begin with themselves. First do an audit on anyone who works for the government, any gov. Then after they pay their back taxes plus fees and fines they can continue their work - without all the fringes.
Lets start with cutting the gov.

Bold statement Lib.

Human rights, written contracts, huge long-haul legal battles that will cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. The government, effectively, rules. They'll make an example of the few, but never will you see the government open their arms to immediate investigation.

It's a shame.

When the government (the people) gets into the world of “art”
there will always be trouble. The people have the right, in fact
they have the obligation, to speak up when the government uses
their money in a way they find objectionable. The government is no
more equipped to choose what should be and should not be funded
than the studios or individuals. Democracy is not (should not be)
concerned with “fair”. It’s never fair to finance one movie over
another, to fund one artist over another.

It is possible that losing government funding will stimulate
private investment. Here in the states we don’t have government
funded motion picture production. So no investor can tell us they
won’t give us money because we can get it from the government.
This could be a very good thing for you filmmakers in the UK. It’s
going to be a very difficult transition - getting off the dole
always is - but it could mean the doors will open that were
previously closed.
