movies Friday the 13th movies?

It's spooky time.

Does anyone enjoy the Friday the 13th movies? If so, what ranking would you give? Or what is your overall experience with them? I just want to open up a discussion about the franchise, as I'm currently re-watching them (in reverse order to switch things up)

It's spooky time :)

I think there should be a new friday the 13th movie that's as scary as real life. In this new one, the president and porn star jenny mcarthy become thought leaders on a sinister but ubiquitous social media service, helping to propagate a deadly virus into a mutation state that kills millions. In the movie, president Jason Vorhees eats a bar of soap, and then claims that it kills the virus, and the jenny mcarthy explains how vaccine needles give you autism. All the people that listen end up dead from a mutated virus, and then rise from the grave as zombies and attack the white house.

You might’ve just saved the horror genre.

Exactly what was missing from Olympus has Fallen and White House Down. Zombies!
Honestly i think the whole indstructable guy with a knife walking slowly toward you is really played out.

If you reboot the franchise you've got to put some new special sauce in there.

Agreed. But every time they throw special sauce in there, it usually ends with them going to space.. so maybe it’s just time to totally retire the genre.

I think I have a solution, now you can't escape him by simply walking at a brisk pace. Sorry about the lazy roto, lol.

Damn I woulda thought Save Point had better background removal tools 🤣🤣🤣

lol, we do. I just didn't want to bother transferring the files through icloud. It's a stupid system. would have added 7 minutes to a 2 minute task. I have gone exclusively to procreate with the apple pencil 2 for real roto. This 10 dollar Ipad pro app puts everything else to shame for speed and accuracy. Flawless roto in literally 2 seconds, if you can put up with the icloud transfer.

for motion roto, we use AI, observe,

lol, are there still people out there that don't know what I look like. I'll need another decade in the Midwest before it gets this bad, lol.

Well, you're not going to like my taste. JASON X and JASON GOES TO HELL were my favorites, because they actually did something different.  In the HELL movie, Jason jumps from body to body, killing scores of people. It reminded me of one of my favorite movies, THE HIDDEN!

In JASON X, I liked what they did, from using David Cronenberg, to shattering a frozen women's head, to the female android, to Jason android. What a hoot!

To be completely honest, except for Tom Savini's makeup FX, Mrs. Vorhees, and the shock ending of the first FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980), it was hard for me to get into this series. Parts 2 and 3 are terrible, IMO. I never bothered with IV, even though Savini came back. (I've seen Jason slide down the knife, and the end scenes with Corey Feldman. Looks decent enough.) I've always like "monster horror," so I did like FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES, because he was more of a terminator/monster than a deformed man with a knife.

Movies like ALIEN, TERMINATOR, CREEPSHOW, NEAR DARK, THE THING, PREDATOR are more up my alley. The parts I like about most slasher movies are the thriller, chase, mystery parts. If those are done well, I like it.. I don't care about kills just for kills sake. Jason movies were a lot about kills for kills sake. Part 1 had FX that people hadn't really seen before (I'm looking at your neck, Kevin Bacon!!). I don't really care about parts 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, and didn't see 4. If they did something different - 6, 9, & 10, I liked them. I was so so about FREDDY VS JASON. Some humorous parts, but Jason is a stick in the mud, most of the time.

I did like the first 4 HALLOWEEN movies, but at least you could root for Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance. "He's the devil." Dr. Loomis' character elevates Michael in a way that Jason isn't. Michael's voyeuristic POV shots, along with Carpenter's music really elevated the experience for me.

Your take is super valid. I agree that the original Friday the 13th is hard to enjoy. I keep going back trying to be more into the storyline, and I just end up being bored.

Parts IV and VI are my favorites in the series, and maybe even the only ones I truly "like". They have some really unique visuals for the time, and Jason feels fully fleshed out (or at least as much as a giant brute in a hockey mask can be). All following movies just feel like life support for the franchise.

The things that work about slasher movies IMO are the suspense and anticipation of the kill - much more so than the kills themselves. Which is why the original 1978 HALLOWEEN is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's almost all anticipation, and barely any actual slashing.

I think the Halloween franchise as a whole got much lamer as time went on, mostly because they were trying so hard to make the character of Michael Myers more than he was originally. It's like JAWS.. The original shark was just a monster that ate things. By the 4th movie they gave the shark a personality and a desire for vengeance. Michael Myers is the same.. there was no motive originally for him. He was just pure evil who killed for no inherent reason. That's always going to be more terrifying to me.
