directing Directing a Film.

As to your question, we don't know what kind of project you are talking about. Is it a commercial, a music video, a short, a feature, an industrial documentary, a play, something else? It also depends on who is hiring. Is it a friend, a professional producer, etc.?

How much should a first time director ask for - for directing a project?
I will assume you are asking about an independently produced feature length movie and
this first time director has several excellent shorts already finished:

That director should ask for no less than 2% of the below-the-line budget. But should
really start the ask at 5% then realistically accept what ever is offered.

For reference the DGA minimum for budget of $2.6 to $3.75 is $75,000 for a 13 week
minimum.
