movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

The Purge: 6/10. Caught an advanced screening of this last night. I came in with somewhat low expectations since the premise is pretty absurd, and I figured the film would be catering to the lowest common denominator (jump scares, needlessly long action scenes, etc.) I was right, but it was...

Seeing If I'm Buying A Good Camera

It records to mini-DV tapes, not mini DVDs. Huge difference there. Regardless, I wouldn't spend $475 on that when you can swing a t3i for a little more, but there are advantages to a GL1 (no worrying about interchangeable lenses, if you just want a ready to go, run-and-gun camera).

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Compliance was fantastic. Glad to see someone else enjoyed it. It got great critical reviews but apparently much more of a mixed bag with the public, a lot of people walked out of screenings and such. It's pretty tough to criticize the movie, as it's basically 100% factual, and the acting was...

    Technical question on focusing

You will need to continously focus as you move the camera. Good focus pulling is an art in itself and takes a lot of practice to master, but for simple shots it is not super difficult, you just have to practice it.

I'm late to this thread, but just wanted to drop in and say it's absolutely fantastic. Excellent, excellent information here; many thanks to you, Audio Post Expert.

    Good tutorials, thanks for sharing!

Why don't more directors operate the camera themselves?

Neveldine and Taylor both started as cinematographers & camera operators before transitioning into directing, so it would make sense for them to be so camera oriented.

Should I pursue a film degree?

I was not a big fan of $30 Film School, but I agree books are a good start. Dov Simens book From Reel to Deal was better. I generally prefer books on more specialized filmmaking topics over the generalized books like those, but that's probably because I got some background from reading articles...

I order my camera later today!

Yes, the "nifty fifty" is a prime. It's a solid starter lens for the DSLR's.

Is being a Production Assistant a bad job?

I would say it would definitely be worth it, especially because you'll be working within a department and getting to observe and learn interesting stuff; art direction is something a lot of indie/low-budget filmmakers overlook. The only time I'd say PA work isn't worth it is if you're just doing...

Should I pursue a film degree?

I always find it interesting how many people on these type of sites who insist that a film degree is a bad idea probably never went to film school, nor are they generally working professionals in the film industry. Just an observation, not necessarily pertaining to this particular thread. School...

    Help Choosing a Camera

There are a few very helpful sound guys on here who can give you links to specific pieces of equipment, but you'll need a shotgun mic, boom pole, external recorder, cables, and headphones (for whoever is monitoring your sound). I would suggest if you're just starting to get into serious...

    Canon 40mm f/2.8 or 50mm f/1.8?

The 50mm 1.8 is a very good introductory lens for the DSLR's. Being able to open up the aperture that extra little bit should help your low-light performance, too.

    THANKSKILLING 3

I'm so stoked for this movie. The first is quite possibly my favorite bad horror film of all time. Hoping to catch a screening of it.

    Canon T2i settings

Try downloading Technicolor Cinestyle. It's a preset picture style for the Canon DSLR's that will give your movie a very flat, low contrast look, which also gives you a ton of freedom to color grade and give you that film look we're all looking for. Besides that, the usual stuff like 24p, 1/50...

    Amateur filmmaker quirks

All of the above, and add poor audio to that list. Possibly the most common (and worst) of them all. Edit: nevermind, dlevanchuk posted right as I did. He covered them all that I can think of. The "teenagers playing adult roles" is a huge one and I've learned my lesson there. From here on out I...

    LA film shoots plunge.

This is good news to the rest of us who don't want to ever move to LA to make a living in film. I'm desperate to find a way to make a career out of film/media production of some sort (still in school so not sure exactly what position yet) but I don't want to move to LA. From what I understand, a...

    video editing help please

I still love Vegas, but I am trying to get away from it to learn Avid since Vegas is rarely used in the pro editing market, and I'm thinking about going into post-production as a career once I graduate. If you're willing to take on the challenge of learning the industry standard software, I say...

How do you get actors to do the 30 shoot schedule?

If you're efficient and your team is dedicated, I don't think you'll need 30 days for a feature. If you have everything meticulously planned and your cast and crew know what they're doing, a 10-hour day would probably net you somewhere between 5-8 minutes of screen time. For a 90 minute feature...
