Canon 40mm f/2.8 or 50mm f/1.8?

Hey this is a pretty specific question for my camera. I have a Canon T3. The video is pretty good but it gets noisy in lowlight. I'm trying to decide if I want f/1.8 or f/2.8. Will there be a huge difference in noise quality? Also which one will get me better results in the long run when I do eventually want to upgrade my camera?

One of the issues with the 50mm 1.8 is that you might experience vignetting wide open. I'm not sure about that being a problem on the APS-C sensor cameras, but it is on the full frames (1D & 5D). The other thing to be aware of is that the build quality is less than stellar. The mount on the base 50mm 1.8 is plastic, the 40mm 2.8 pancake lens is metal. I don't know what part of Washington you're in, but you might want to look into renting both lenses for a couple of days and do your own side by side shoot out. If you do, post your results here.
