Melanie Martinez

ONLY sang, man you are pretty harsh!

The girl is a REAL musician because she plays instruments. Okay dude.

I think I will take my fake-musician-singing-ass out of this thread, lol.

Being able to sing doesn't make you a musician does it?
Everybody sings in the shower so if all it takes is singing to be a musician then everybody i know is a musician

I mean if you are singing original melody and you composed those notes in that order for your song you're definitely a musician in my book.
But you are writing music at that point not just singing.

Look at this way... if I were to ask you what Is Bradley Coopers musical style what would you say?
Does Brad even HAVE a music style? Who the hell knows.. the only music he has written was written "in character" for a film that is a remake.

What we know is the music style of "Jack" his character from the film A Star is Born.
If bradley has never written any songs as himself then how can you call bradley a musician?

He's just an actor playing a musician.
Is he a professional chef too because he starred in burnt and took some cooking lessons?

Do you think that bradley cooper is a professional sniper because he went to the shooting range a few times for American Sniper?
This is actually a really interesting topic - maybe it deserves its own thread?

I think you just don't like either (a) Bradley Cooper or (b) A Star is Born or (c) both. :)

I actually like bradley cooper.
I thought A star is born was an average film, certainly not bad. It met my expectations.

You guys must feel like I'm not giving him enough credit?
I say he is not a "real musician" because he was only playing a musician in a film... does he ever go and perform live for audiences and play music?

Maybe I'm speaking from ignorance and he has musical aspirations outside of A Star is Born

It does. I'm in a band. I only sing. I'm referred to as a musician. Like, if I screw up "Fucking musicians" Or, "What's it like being a musician?"

And he is more than "able" to sing, he sang the songs of a film and put out a record! More than me right at this moment, so yes he is.

It's not really that interesting. You are trying to apply labels instead of looking at their work. Is he a book definition musician? Who cares?!

I don't deny that this girl is talented. I mean look at her videos, I've never seen video clips like this before. and I understand that if you admire someone it's tempting to give that person all the credits it's just a mental thing. But to be honest in the world of entertainment, specially in music there is always a co-something. No one does it all solo. There is a big team of talent behind every project, they all contribute. But sadly in the world of music the singer tends to get most of the attention. Most of melanie's song's are co-written:
you can look up the rest. Now we don't know the exact "percentile" she contributed to the writing of every song 😄 , but she definitely didn't do it all alone. So I'm not sure we should give her the whole credit. Same thing goes with her new feature.

Ah yes but she has written at least ONE song by herself right?

Think about it this way... If you went and performed stand up comedy for 30 minutes on netflix and then at the end it said
Written by Pedramyz, Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, Performed by Pedramyz

I would be eyeballing you pretty damn hard man... I would be very skeptical of you as a professional comedian.
How much of that comedy was really you... idk. Because you've got some damn funny people in those credits.

Yes yes but you go on tour or perform at some point right? I can buy a ticket and see you do music?

When does Bradley Cooper go on his music tour? Where is he performing next?
That's an important part of being a professional isnt it

Apparently me lol.
I saw a TV show once.. it was a comedy focusing on an actor and he had like 80 different professions like a super genius that has lived dozens of lifetimes, all because of the different roles he had been in. It was a comedy though.

Maybe "Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television " cant be sure

We get it man. You don't like him.

I do like him. but i'm not gonna go out to a nice restaurant he owns and pay $300 for a meal because he acted as a chef lol.
I wish limitless had been renewed for season two :(

Edit: What i have a problem with is that he had no musical experience before the film.. he took music lessons just for the film.
That isn't a musician making a film.. when the film started preproduction and there was a script he was not a musician at all right? zero music.

It was only after the movie was moving that he started learning music stuff.
Thats not a musician deciding to make a movie

Ten bucks says if you asked him if he is a musician, he would say no. So would I actually, I would say, "No, I sing." That's why I don't care if someone is a "real" something or other. If the work can stand on its own, that's what I will judge by.

Ah well I'm just trying to give melanie proper credit.
I never meant to put Bradley down.

If someone is doing cool stuff and making history they deserve acknowledgement.

It does appear to me she is the first musician to move into film and write/direct/star in an ORIGINAL film.
Haha how about that 😄

I hear what you are saying. But how about this... how many people come here and say they want to know how to be become a writer, all they've written is one poem and a short... and we tell them, "You are a writer!"

they are a writer but they arent a professional writer.
Sell that poem for $0.02 now youre a professional 😄

That's a straw man argument I never said he was a pro. I said he was a musician because of what he did. So know you're just putting words in people's mouths.

I never meant to create a straw man argument I really thought we were talking about professional singers the entire time.

If youre talking about amateur singers literally 100% of people who have a car have probably sang along to the radio at some point in their lives... so if the entire population is singers this discussion would be kinda pointless.

But I screwed up not explicitly saying professional singer when I was asking if any other singer has attempted this feat before.

No prob. I am not a pro musician (I wish!) and most of the filmmakers here are not professional filmmakers, but some are. Yes, that makes a difference, I am glad you can see it now.

It had an Alice In Wonderland/Ugly Betty vibe from the parts I saw, and looked interesting.

Most of her music videos contain short stories so she has plenty of practice directing at this point.
I'm rooting for this kid, I think I have a pretty good eye for talent so its like fantasy football for me and she is on my team.

I played guitar for a few years but I got discouraged because there were people who had been playing since they were 7 and they could sing way better than me too. So then I moved onto drums because a lot of people needed a drummer. Most I ever did was record a few songs in college but we weren't great lol. It was a fun memory. I wouldn't even consider myself an aspiring professional musician at this point and i think that is a huge difference in label too. Just aspiring to be a professional puts you into a different category than a hobbyist.

Most people reject labels anyway because they can come across as pretentious... it's really others applying them. Unless they are the job description type label. Example. A renown artist may call himself a painter, or "just" a painter.
