It was, until google got a hold of it. Seems like they're trying to wrangle everyone to their advertisers or their partners.
Last I heard YT wasn't making money.

That's what will spur all the changes to make it a haven for advertising, and thus cause the mass exodus to the next site that has no ads, will sell to a major corporation at the initial stock offering, then THAT site will become inundated with ads and cause a mass exodus.... 20 GOTO 10, repeat.
Has anyone been on MYSPACE lately? It's horrid. It's a sign of things to come when big sites need money.

We can sit here and talk about how it annoys us etc etc but a million dollar a week (or whatever) bill has got to be paid somehow.
I don't like ads much, I just don't see how they can pay their whopping great bandwidth bill without selling ad space. I'm sure they've wracked their brains... We can sit here and talk about how it annoys us etc etc but a million dollar a week (or whatever) bill has got to be paid somehow.
If anyone had any other ideas I'd like to hear them.
Would you pay a $10 a year access fee? 100 million people would be $1 billion of revenue to apply to storage/bandwidth/maintenance. $50/year for commercial free access? How about $5 per upload?
No no and no. I know they're in a difficult situation. I'm just wondering how they will resolve their situation...
On OPENFILM.COM, they have a $3 a month and $10 a month option to watch short films with no ads....
VIMEO.COM does the Pro-accounts to get more bandwidth and prioritized uploads. I did it for 1 year and chose not to renew. I found I wasn't using anywhere near the free limits after the first few weeks.
Looks like YouTube upped their ads. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed, but they run video ads on a majority of videos now. Right at the top, you can choose to skip it after a few seconds.
Vimeo has Plus (the premium version they've had for years) and now they offer a new version called Pro. Plus is $60 and you get a lot more bandwidth, the ability to remove the vimeo logo and change color on embeds and more. Some of it you may be able to do on regular now, not sure. We use the snot out of plus.
Pro is way different. You can actually set a domain to go to with your vimeo channel and get a highly customizable webpage with your video feed, no commercial limitations, replace the vimeo logo with your own logo on their site, your site or any site and again, more bandwidth, etc... I helped set up a pro account for a client that needed it's features. I think it was $200 a year, but he could put all the episodes of his 30 minute show on there without violating any vimeo terms and it was really, really easy to match it all to his site.
No, I mean a for real commercial before the video starts, not a banner ad or anything. It's only on videos set up for revenue sharing it looks like.
I agree the new layout sucks a bit...
Why? I think it's one of the most amazing sites ever made. Scratch that, one of the most amazing inventions ever. The rise of YT is as important as the invention of the printing press in human history.
Well, technically someone had to invent the code for flash video. But that wasn't youtube, that was the distributors of online porn. In fact you can thank the porn industry for a lot of technological innovations.
