Youtube videos

There are plenty of filmmakers on youtube that get solid views. And no, their films don't mainly consist of cats.

Absolutely. The question is how did they get there? There's a lot of noise on youtube...how do you rise above it and get noticed? It's a good question that I don't have the answer to (self promotion has always been my weakest point). Do you have a couple examples of good filmmakers that do well, youtube-wise? Maybe we can take a look at how they got to where they are.

Singing about cats!

Now... as a snark-mock video you could do a "I hate cats" video.
But... you can expect some vicious backlash, good or bad, it's additional publicity.
I think that's the Fox "News" approach, honestly.

GL!

Not quite so amusing, bordering on fail http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnCrn3FsYaQ&feature=related

I'm not criticizing the approach, only identifying it as an advertising marketing strategy to provide content for an audience segment clearly motivated by this effective approach.
CNN used to be good until Fox News took their cake, and is now copying it's format to reclaim market share.

Know what stirs up good viewership on these message boards?
A good argument.
Sad but true.

While that is his first upload to that channel, Dan Trachtenberg had quite a big following already and many avenues to promote. He currently hosts the online show "Totally Rad Show," previously hosted the online show "Geekdome," and has over 27,000 followers on twitter. It is going to be much different launching a video that big without two huge audiences (TRS and Twitter) to tell about it as well as previously being known for other shows.

That's a good point, John, but also something not to write off. Success breeds success in a lot of cases. It does answer part of the question of how to get noticed on YouTube, though. Still, his movie had over a million views on the first day which far exceeds his established audience.

Coming from obscurity, people need a compelling reason to watch. Shorts have never been extremely popular in any market and YouTube isn't any different. Sadly, it appears an outrageous piece has a better chance than a serious project for most of us.

polcan99
finalcutking
5secondfilms
rosenchuck1

These are some of the guys I've subbed on youtube. There's probably a lot more If I look.

ok then, just do what they did \ do...

Have you thoroughly analyzed their respective histories?
What do these BUSINESSES (its not a youtube channel, is a biz) have in common?

that will get you to some good questions that might lead to interesting investigations that could possibly result in some useful informaiton. Translating that information into actionable knowledge is the next step..
