Announcing Wheatgrinders Monthly IT Challenge For April 2011

Well, another month has gone by and challenges metered out and met.
check the videos and other chit chat here.. http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=29998

The Challenge area for April is Production Audio

So lets do another.. here are the rules\timeline in review..

Here is the time line in review:
  1. "Challenge Area" Announced:
On the FIRST Monday in April Ill tell everyone what the "Challenge Area" will be (Production Audio) DONE
  2. Suggestion Box Open:
From that Monday through Thursday everyone suggests specific challenges that support the main focus
Were doing this ^^^ now, just reply here with your ideas of what a "Production Audio" challenge could be. The challenge needs to be doable in a weekend. Thats about the only real requirement.
  3. Suggestion Box Closed:
On Friday I gather up all the ideas that meet my strict yet completely arbitrary criteria and I set up a poll
  4. Vote:
    Voting over the weekend.
  5. Challenge Details Announced:
On the 2nd Monday in April the challenge is announced.
  6. Make the movies
    duh
  7. Upload the movies
Everyone, and I mean everyone, even if you didn't vote, or are afraid of clowns, has until 11:59 PM on the Sunday before the the first Monday in May to upload

Thats it, everything else is left to your interpretation.

Upload to youtube and post embed in the yet to be created submission thread, preferred, but whatever...

Please Note:
The 1st place prize is nada, 2nd place prize is zilch and 3rd place gets nothin.
There are NO rules, ignore the challenge details if you want, though I reserve the right, and encourage others, to type in all caps..
"BAD FORM! BAD FORM!" if your so tactless as to do something so antisocial as to "topic crash!"

Starter..
Please follow this format in your submission suggestions..

Production Audio Challenge Suggestion:

  • Challenge Name: "Gone With The Wind"
  • Challenge Description: "record breaking wind in an inappropriate place\setting, real or fictional"
  • Challenge Limitations: "footage must be included, though quality of video doesn't matter unless you want it to"

Challenge Name: Sound is ALL the Experience
Challenge Description: make a short film where the only way to tell what is happening is by listening. So your image might be all macros, or behind the characters, or otherwise shot in a way where you wouldn't be able to tell what was happening if the sound was off. But tell the story relying almost all on audio.
Challenge Limitations: No music

But what is "Production Audio?"
To me that means audio captured on set\in the field.. we shall defer to the forum audio expert Alcove Audio for more elaborate definition.

Alcove?

Is it audio we produce ourselves, as opposed to downloading something off the web to foley together and dub in?

Recorded on the set or in the field, or can we do our own post recording and foley it in?
Does ADR count?

Hey, there are no real rules.. so I think ADR is fine

  • Challenge Name: "Just telling you what I heard!"
  • Description: Replace the dialogue in scene from your favorite popular major motion picture.
  • Limitations: Less than a minute. Extra points if there is a chicken in the shot.

  • Challenge Name: "Dialog Clean Up"
  • Description: Begin with <20 seconds of "junky" dialog you captured in the field followed by both the cleaned up in post version and an ADR re-dub version.
  • Limitations: Less than a minute. Extra points for including a screen capture image of the audio track.

  • Challenge Name: "Sound FX Fantastica!"
  • Description: Replace common audio expectations with a symphony of preposterous sounds & experiences.
  • Limitations: Less than a minute. Gotta build it all yourself.

But what is "Production Audio?"

Production audio/sound is sound recorded on the actual set.

ADR/looping is replacing the dialog recorded on set.

Foley is sound performed "live" in sync to the film. Not strictly limited to footsteps and other human created sounds.

Sound effects are sounds edited to fit the visual. (Technically, if you edit footsteps from a library to the visual they are sound FX, not Foley.)

Uncle Bobs suggestion - use only Foley and sound FX - no dialog.

How about a short compilation of what you hear every day? This could be quite interesting and could get everyone a little glimpse into everyones life, without even showing a video/picture!

Well there ya go.. Thanks Alcove.

Shall we limit the challenge suggestions to only those that deal with audio captured on set\location? no biggie, Ill put up what ever you guys write for the vote.. but...

That is very limiting, unless you mean sounds that we capture ourselves; create your own sound FX and Foley - no using a sound library. The point would be how much can you express with sound.

Folks,
Please save me the untangling of your crazy stream of conciseness ramblings.. (something Im prone to my self) as I have to figure out what you MEAN when I set up the poll.. use this format for suggestions:

Challenge Name: <title for your challenge, this goes on the poll>
Description: < a brief description of the challenge and any interesting tidbits>
Limitations: <OPTIONAL> <Any bounds you want to put in place>

Thanks

oh, in case its not clear, the original rules as open as they are, do require this to be NEW work.. see number 6 in the top post. You may only make the movie AFTER the vote. So no pulling stuff out of your closet.. but then again. all rules are superseded by the clause that states:

There are NO rules, ignore the challenge details if you want, though I reserve the right, and encourage others, to type in all caps..
"BAD FORM! BAD FORM!" if your so tactless as to do something so antisocial as to "topic crash!"

hehe

Challenge Name: Roley Foley Poley
Description: 30 seconds of un-Folied footage and the 30 seconds of the same footage where the meaning is entirely changed, solely through the use of Foley.
Limitations: Budget must be less than $4,250,000

hallenge Name: Everyday!
Description: Capture Sounds which you hear every day. No changing them in post! What do you hear everyday? Try to tell a story with sounds only!
Limitations: No Video, Otherwise you are not limited!

Challenge Name: Say it with sound.

Description: Use sounds by themselves to tell a story, or to enhance (or create a counterpoint to) visuals.

Limitations: You must create the sounds yourself - no using sound FX libraries. No dialog (creating your own "radio" or "TV" announcers are okay).

Probably not the best practice of technique, but could be a lot of fun:

Challenge Name: Mouth Off
Description: either shoot a scene or re-dub existing footage with entire new audio, all coming from your mouth. This includes all music, dialogue and sound effects, multiple layers okay.
Limitations: At least 30 seconds, at least 10 different sounds.
