what is it? (lens)

Found this at a garage sell for $20. Figured it was something just cool to look at, but maybe its something more?

Three gears on lens, a focus, zoom and aperture..

my first guess is its an industrial lens for some machine vision application
second guess is its a projector lens
third is a prototype for a cinema lens

its big, for scale here it is next to my canon fd 50mm.

I was free lensing with this last night on my GH2.. I think I can adapt it. Its a small image circle, maybe good for BMPCC or ext on gh2
