Truth about Independent Filmmaking

9 . Film Forums

Independent Film Forums are guarded by police and one thousand soldiers moderators. I think you will get out and never to return in the first day. “”You have received a warning at…” or “You have been banned for the following reason:spam, Date the ban will be lifted: Never”. What further to say my friends.

Yes, everyone here is banned on day one, we have 0 members.

If you are getting those messages on forums you visit it is for a reason.

Wow, have we veered off topic.

As of 2010
Lithuania - 42.0 per 100,000
Russia - 37.4 per 100,000
Belarus - 35.0 per 100,000
Latvia - 34.3 per 100,000
Estonia - 33.2 per 100,000
Hungary - 32.1 per 100,000
Slovenia - 30.9 per 100,000
Ukraine - 29.4 per 100,000
Kazakhstan - 28.7 per 100,000
Finland - 24.3 per 100,000

The US didn't even make the top 10 of suicides. We hit 39 behind France,
Sweden and even Switzerland.

We did get off topic and that was partly my doing. My apologies to the OP.

Interesting top ten list. My guess is the common denominator is alcohol abuse.

Yes and the reason might be inflexible, and brand centric policies of forum owners. It's interesting that Indietalk maintains a liberal and tolerant policy with regards to posts and not coincidentally has a comparatively civil level of discourse.

Basically after you turn 26 or so, your value is judged by your wealth from that point forward, by everyone except your biological family.

As a generalization that's probably true. Now I know why most people don't tell me the time of day.

And interesting question is if the judgment varies according to if the money is earned or inherited.

Both fly first class, so the opinion on the ground doesn't matter much. Money talks.

26? Really? Prepare for turbulence and locate your barf bag. Your mileage may vary.

Hi, thanks everybody for your time.
Rik, I don't take it from nowhere especially, it is my experience, but of course I read something about film almost everyday.
I try to my English make better and then try to express myself in different manner.
- contradictory - At most of the time I am very positive, optimistic, hyperactive, with a lot of "empathy" but I guess sometimes come dark ages of mind.
Great observation Nate Note.
I will answer all you question Rik...

we don't need to be enemies and wasted our time and our post to "argue"

We are here to work together and help each other, like Director Rik tries to help in every post with his experience.

For me - those are bad films.

So you have seen all 25 of these films and many more and they
are all bad films? All of them? Not a single good film among those
25? Not one?

Okay then.

I have seen 11 of the 25 you mention. 6 of them are (in my opinion)
excellent films. 4 I quite liked. But if you saw and didn't like all 25 on
this list then I understand why you feel film festivals are not good.

Can you tell me 10 films you do like?

Also, where did you see all the films presented at the Venice Film Festival?
Where you there? I envy you. I have never been and always wanted to go?
How did you manage to see all 25 of those movies?

And last ten years, 90% film in the film festivals - nothing special.
I must admit to having a little problem with this statement. Which is why
I have a problem with your article. I respect peoples informed opinions - I
am having a difficult time believing you have attended so many film festivals
around the word to know that 90% of the films in festivals are "nothing
special".

What film festivals have you attended in the last 10 years?

CamVader, use your irony and sarcasm in other situations.

I think we've had some miscommunication. I was commenting on the notion that one should be "made" by age 26 which I find very idealistic and unlikely in most cases. I'm not your enemy by any stretch of the imagination.

Hi Rik

I was 4 past years in Kustendorf film festival. I am working ten years Nis film festival and have pass to go and to watch some films in festivals over Europe. And write sometimes about them (not in english :)) . I didn;t watch all of them. But ok, maybe I overact.

I like to watch films from Directors like:

1. Jim Jarmusch
2. Dusan Makavejev
3. Wong Kar-Wai
4. Aki Kaurismaki
5. Michael Redford
6. Krzysztof Kieslowski
7. Jan Svankmajer
8. Wim Wenders

something like that. From "new" I like Antichrist, Ghost Writer, maybe Black Swan, ... and maybe few more.

What are you doing in film industry? Are you FIlm Director? Maybe we can make some film together or cooperate in some project.

One thousand soldiers moderating? Does chilipie know about the workload?

I was going to say, being on this forum, it's been one of the best forums-film or otherwise I have ever been on. Perhaps Chilipie missed the memo about the workload! :D

I think you did over react. Posting a list of 25 films you have
not seen and saying they are bad is an over reaction.

Film festivals often show wonderful, daring, artistic films that
do not see wide release of reach a wide audience. I can't imagine
why you feel 90% of films in film festivals are nothing special
when you have not seen all the films.

On your list there are at least five excellent films - in my
opinion. You should see “La piel que habito”, “The Forgotten
Space”, “The Tree of Life”, “Sleeping Beauty” and “The Kid with a
Bike” before you call them bad films.

I think this is why your article isn’t as good as it could be. An
informed opinion is a wonderful thing in an article. Your article
is missing that. I respect your opinion if you see a film and do
not like it. How can I (or anyone) respect the opinion of anyone
who says movies they have not seen are bad?

That is why I feel your article is based on things you have read
and your misunderstandings rather than on your own personal
observations and opinions.

What are you doing in film industry? Are you FIlm Director? Maybe we can make some film together or cooperate in some project.
Yes, I am a director. And maybe we can make a film together.

Yes, something like that.
Is there any very good film site to follow (fund news, new equipment, free entry festivals and something like that)
I do follow 5dcinema and hdwarrior, and this forum, ...
I send you info about my next film when I am done, maybe you can help somehow or join if you like the idea. I am from Europe.

The place you need to be to study film is "box office Mojo"

When you get there, it may seem that there is no information about filmmaking here.

But this site contains the largest amount of the most relevant information in the world about making films.

When I'm writing up presentations for film investors, I cite this database chapter and verse. If any single place will help you plan a film release, it's this one. The historical archives.

If you want to learn about specific techniques, you are already in the right place I think

Thanks Nate,

what about you? Are you Independent Film Director as well?

I've directed and sold an independent feature, yes

I also made 2 seasons of a half hour web show

If you'd like some actual connections, I can provide some for you. Just be aware that the market is extremely competitive, and you'll need some real skills before you'll get very far.

We're setting up a 600k studio in Nevada in a little over a year. Feel free to submit your projects. We read scripts, we work with anyone with talent and drive.

do you specialize in a particular field that you are very good at?

Areas of need:

editors
post producers
concept artists
orchestral composers
executive producers
actors
Rigging engineers
business and accounting
web design specialists
3d animators
compositors

Areas of Zero need:

Idea people that want to give notes
grips that sleep in till noon and then answer the phone with "sorry dude, I didn't know you were serious about that 7am thing, I mean, how could you be"
Investors that want to throw in 2 grand on a 2 million dollar project

Just kidding around there, one day, you'll look back at those lines and laugh
