Space Battle Scenes

I'm doing some research for a possible script, so please help me out.. If you're a fan of sci-fi, that is.

What is your favorite (or favorites) space fight/aerial combat scene in a film or TV show? What did you like best about it?

In "Empire of Dreams", a documentary on the making of Star Wars, the narrator said GL used war footage from WWII dogfights as a basis for his space battle scenes. Star Trek sized battleships would not maneuver like X-wing fighters, but you may be able to look at the older movies to see how the fighting is portrayed.

Keep me posted, because I'd like to know how you make out. I'd also like to know how expensive it would be to do a low-budget SF movie with space battle scenes.

BSG by far, has the most epic large scale space warfare..

for expense I think it depends on the size of the battle..

fleets of ships vs fleets of ships. or one on one fighter dog fight..

So far it's something i'm talking with someone about writing. It'll probably have mostly those dogfights, but I do want fleet battles.

Does anyone like any of the space scenes in the Star Wars prequels?

I'm still waiting for someone to do a realistic space battle scene. Space is very much not an atmosphere and very much not an ocean. A real space battle will be fought very differently and it would be pretty awesome to have one realistically depicted.

Atomic Rockets has a tremendous amount of information for anyone wanting to write realistic space stuff. They have an entire section on war in space. Here's the intro page for that section.

The space battle in Serenity was more realistic than those in, say, the Star Wars films. Certainly not totally realistic, but closer than is typical for the genre.

It doesn't get any more realistic than this

serenity and the firefly by far favorite space fight scenes. honestly though it may be interesting instead of trying tp do a traditional spaceship battle take some influence from ww2 style arieal combat from movies like redtails and memphis. then using that style film a space dogfight. i dont knpw justa thought.

I so badly want people to get away from the "dogfights in space" structure. THINGS IN SPACE DO NOT WORK THAT WAY.

mumble grumble wheresthehardscifi grumble mumble...

It probably wouldnt be too hard to do a moonraker style shootout.

Unfortunately, the battles will have a bit of dogfight to em, sorry Escher.

What's everyone's take on complete silence in a space battle?

i mean i understand scientificly dog fight style space battles are ridiculous. but its a film gotta spice it up. and as far as no dialogue i can get behind that still music tho right?

It makes me sad that people can't seem to dream up interesting space battles that are more realistic. Spice it up?? You've got relative velocities between ships of thousands of miles per hour! Forget lasers, just toss a cloud of ball-bearings out the hatch. :)

Once you get away from "dogfights in space" you'll find yourself thinking of things never before put to screen.

Did you know that if you detonate a large nuclear bomb in space, the explosion won't really hurt the ship (no atmosphere to carry the pressure wave), but the blast of x-rays will cause massive kinetic waves in the hull of the ship that will go all the way around, smash into each other, and rip the hull apart?

That's waaay cooler than "pew pew kaboom pew pew pew!". :P

my story is a comedy, with a hint of parody. Groundbreaking space battles aren't what I'm going for. I'm going for good laughs in a story that is familiar to the viewer, Star Wars being the primary thing that comes to mind.

There was a shot in Star Wars Revenge of the Sith, where a flagship is destroyed... something in space would then just kinda float... what does it do? IT PLUMMETS DOWNWARDS!! I remember sitting in the theater and going "Oh, come on now!"

I think I've been inspired to satirize the misconceptions of space warfare.

i dont know i mean i feel ya. honestly i hate lasers that is pretty dumb. i,meant dogfight more ww2 style of flying the close calls the crazy aerial dive bombs. now for weapons completely agree, with you.

In Empire Strikes Back, the Falcon being chased through the asteroid belt. It's got about the right level of action, humor and you're still feeling rather close to those involved. Oh, and the music.... priceless.

You know, in Revenge of the Sith, I quite like the sequence where they're landing the capital ship. Off the top of my head, no other ship sequence in the rest of the prequels got any interest from me.
