Sound Design In "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking" CD

I was blown away, not for the first time, on my way to work this morning on the power and efficacy of the sound design in "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking" album by Roger Waters.

If you've not heard the CD or need a refresher..

My favorite example is the 2nd track, (Running Shoes) at around 1:15 there is the best use of a down shift in a music track ever followed up by some pretty good sounding, uh, shall we say "adult activity"..

Comments.

I'll give it a listen this weekend and have more detailed comments. I remember not being crazy about the album, but I'm not really crazy about Clapton, an opinion for which you can feel free to disregard anything else I say ;-) I did love "Amused To Death" though. For my money Jeff Beck is an acceptable substitute for David Gilmour!

Waters was always the biggest driving force of Pink Floyd after Syd Barretts departure. Waters did all of the between-the-songs tone poems and sound design, which were and are an indelible signature of Pink Floyd. A post-Floyd personal favorite is Radio Kaos.

He was and is a very large influence on my music and sound design style.

I think wheat's confusion is due to the album being in no way country. It's sort of a progressive rock concept album (though lighter on the prog side...a far cry from King Crimson sort of stuff).

lol, you may have an opinion :) You may also comment on the sound design without having to LIKE the music, in fact I would value your opinion on that MORE than a biased super fan like me! lol

By sound design I mean all the NON MUSICAL elements, talking, sound FX etc..

It sounds like country to me, so I wil put progressive rock on my list of things, I am not allowed to have a opinion about.

I wouldn't write off prog with one album, especially Waters solo since he's building on and diverging from a massive back-catalogue of Pink Floyd awesomeness. If you're not familiar, there are quite a lot of foothills to get over before tackling inclines like this! I recommend you first check out some of the more accessible Floyd stuff like Dark Side of the Moon, and who the hell doesn't like that album?

That said, I haven't listened to much solo Waters myself, but I like what I've heard so far (four songs in!). Sounds like a natural progression from The Wall, all whispers and shouts, plodding pomp and dreamy blues guitar. Lovely stuff.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I liked Floyd without Waters much better than I liked Waters without Floyd. Balance...and Rick Wright! Of course, I like the earlier stuff (Meddle in particular) more than latter day Floyd too.

And poor, poor Syd. Baby Lemonade is one of my favorite songs of all time.

All that said, I love listening to music that I don't like, finding what I do and what I don't like about it. I'm all about analysis and learning! You can learn something from everything. So, Feutus, no reason not to share what you think!
