sock loupe

I gave it a test drive. I was unimpressed.

For run-and-gun shooting it’s cumbersome. One nice advantage of a
flipout LCD screen on smaller cameras is the ability to frame up
easily while shooting handheld. This device takes that away,
making it just another viewfinder.

For narrative shooting (on sticks or a jib) I always use a monitor
for framing and a tape measure for focus. Never the LCD screen. On
smaller cameras I don’t even use the viewfinder for focus because
it’s usually not accurate enough.

I’m sure that part of my problem is my experience with
professional cameras. I’m used to looking through a viewfinder and
a black and white one at that. I find I can more accurately follow
focus and hold my framing that way than with a LCD screen.

So perhaps those camera operators who do not use a monitor or who
only have experience using the LCD screen, this device can help. I
just don’t like having to press my eye onto the sock-lupe
viewfinder as I would with a viewfinder on small non-shoulder
mount cameras.

It just seems really unnecessary to me as a camera operator.
