After talking about FPS & shutter speeds and videoey vs pitiful attempts to make video look like film with McKinise I wanted to give 60FPS @ 1/125 shutter speeds a fair day in court.
Honestly, I can't tell a big whup diff between this and the usual stuff I've lately shot at 30FPS @ 1/60.

I know the internet knocks the frame rate down to 29.97FPS, but still I expected some difference to be evident.

A) It just occurred to me that it might be that I opened a 30FPS file format in my Adobe Premiere NLE to edit this with and that pretty much killed any 60FPS effects, or...
B) Maybe the subject matter wasn't something conducive to 60FPS showing any appreciable difference with.

IDK.

Just 'spearmentin'. ;)

Nice video as usual.
Have you considered making the transitions between each shot fade rather than cut? I know it may seem like an amateurish idea but artistically I think it works. Nature isn't straight cuts and square pegs, it's curved, flowing. Short fades would reflect that, I feel.

Going to Norway for a week, I'll bring back a ton of photos of the epic views and sights. :3

I have considered cross fades, I'm artistically opposed to them because they're just soooo expected.

I have a decent heavy metal square rig, but it's rather ostentatious.
So, I built a homemade similar-principled 1X18" black iron pipe weight using a 2' cut-to-length sawed off 1/4" thread/fender washer/lock washer/nut/wing nut apparatus that attaches to the camera mount.
It's kinda goofy looking, but less so than the square rig.
I'm still practicing with it, so bear with the next few videos where all these wacky format changes coming!

I just bought a new laptop though (the other one was on its way out after 3 years of very hard work). Not a good time to get a new camera. :P
Speaking of buying...
Any free video creation/editing software out there that can make the kind of videos I make for Youtube?
What about cheap ones (less than $100)?

The laptop is for teaching related stuff and consuming media, not creating media, so it's not important. Just so you know though, it's Windows 8 *shivers* and after some very heavy customisation I've managed to make it work like Windows 7. XD

My main computer is running Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

I'm not making films or anything, just uploading music with images and video to Youtube.

Edit: I tried Power Director and I don't like it. The interface is great, the FX are useful and the whole thing is easy to use but rendering the videos is a problem. The FX stutter when they're rendered.
This isn't a resource problem, my computer has an i7 processor, tons of RAM and a decent graphics card. Rendering only uses 24% of the system's resources. Anyway, this same issue occurs even at lower quality renders.

I use VMS and I love it. I tried out all the "entry" level versions when I started, and VMS was the only one that I could get something done in quickly. The new version is now 64bit and supports 20 tracks (previously it only supported 10) has strong audio support and seems pretty stable.

Combined with HitFilm (which it supports embedded projects with, very handy) it's a pretty decent package for a very decent price.

The biggest downfall of Vegas I've found, is it's very limited (like, nonexistent) collaborative features. As in sharing an EDL or any sort of interchange with other programs. With Vegas Pro, you can embed other projects, so that's one way of "sharing" with other Vegas users (VMS can't embed other projects).

Overall though, I've been very happy with both it and HitFilm.

Major changes in approach with this video.

- 30FPS + 1/60 shutter speed has been changed to → 60FPS + 1/125 shutter speed.
- Stationary tripod shots have been replaced with → handheld camera. (I still need a lot more practice with this, BTW.)
- Transitions between clips have been swapped from plain cuts to → cross fades.
- Camera audio has been replaced with → audio from an external recorder, Tascam DR-40.
- Video audio has been → edited for stereo!

Please let me know if any of this eeeeven matters to you.

YT videos are all 30fps, max resolution 2k but usually 1080p and pretty damn compressed to around 8mb/s. I don't think all this extra work on the video will make a difference. I'm not a video expert though, so if you feel it makes a difference for you then by all means, go ahead. ^^

On the sound side of things mono to stereo is a big upgrade, that does make a difference. Youtube's audio format is 192kbs at 1080p so don't work too hard on that aspect either. You do need to fix the audio glitches/pops though, and maybe take out a little of the high end frequencies when you have just high pitched, raspy sounds for an entire video.

I liked the bit with the red bug, that was interesting to watch at a high resolution. :)

Digital Feature Concept Video and 48 Hour Film Fest entry

A couple movies for you guys. One we did as a promo for a possible digital feature. The other we did a couple weeks ago for the 48 Hour film fest.

Using Audacity for audio editing:
If I remember correctly, Audacity isn't set up to "auto crossfade" audio (stupid, I know). This means you have to manually crossfade everything and make a small slope at the beginning of every audio file like this:
FADE.png

(This is in REAPER but it's the same principle)
Drag the top corner but don't make it long, just long enough to avoid a "pop" as the audio jumps in. 20ms is enough usually.


Lyn, the short film is good. It's a shame the audio is kind of bad as it's so dependent on sound as a focal point, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
As for the feature trailer... Oh wait I recognise that. ;P
