So,
just finished the new william gibson novel, (like this on, his last two have had a big fashion theme, hence my other thread) anyway..

his stuff always makes me go internet hunting..

this is "industrially" beautiful to me...

That one with the missiles on top was built in 1987..

The last Ekranoplan from the former Soviet Union was the 400 ton LUN. It was built in 1987 with 100% military application in mind as a missile launcher and troop carrying ship. It was equipped with six large missiles on top of the fuselage, and could carry tanks and trucks in its large cargo hold

If I remember right. The research started back in the 60's and continued up until the fall of the Soviet Union. The United States also is investigateing this concept for troop transport, and even as commercial travel because the fuel consumption is mush less once the vehicle produes it "airwave" then it essentially "surfs" that wave. They cant get consistent results though.
 
I still think this technology has potential....could be that a lot of the limitations could be overcome by digital tech.
