Niche markets?

As I did some research for my steampunk themed short film I came into contact with larger and larger groups of folks who are "into that" I think that there is a niche market for steampunk styled films that I could tap into. Turns out that I really like the look so in one sense, im a stempunk convert :) but that aside, there could be some business logic to it as well. For driving sales I believe that steampunk films with HOW YOU BUILT THAT PROP featurets would be compelling, seems that particular sub culture is very heavy into DIY.

I suppose this is true for any fashion\fetish sub culture\genre out there.

So what other experiences\knowledge about niche film markets do the royal "we" of IT have?

For example, when exactly is a target market consider a niche?

I'm a pretty big fan of steampunk, and have written a few scripts in that genre. The main problem is that the niche doesn't seem to be that big, and it can be hard to work within that genre at the low/micro budget level. That being said, I think it has huge potential and I wish you the best of luck. I'm looking forward to seeing your short.

"Niche" is as much about its size, as it is the rarity, competition, and demand.

Most "Niche" audiences, are huge admirers of their product. There's no inbetween. (Very much like a niche "superclub" of a mass franchise) There's a certain responsibility that when going into a Niche, you have to understand that the audience knows what they want, and they'll only buy/watch it if it's exactly that.

Steampunk has a pretty big cult following. I've seen some TERRIBLE shorts actually do pretty well because of steam punk themes. A really well done steampunk feature has a lot of potential. It's the Repo the Genetic Opera crowd, lot of crossover.

I filmed a short film, titled "Steampunks" (I know... how original) last October and plan on doing a steampunk feature length here shortly. I'd be interested in collaborating !! :)

Count me in for some Steampunk enthusiasm! It's definitely seeing a rise in popularity these days. As far as "what is a niche", it seems any sub-genre can be a niche. For example, cyberpunk is a form of sci-fi. Sci-fi fans will occasionally enjoy some cyberpunk, but there is a hardcore fanbase that is REALLY into exactly that.

I agree with you that the culture is more DIY than others (where else are you going to find a brass and wood case for your laptop/cellphone?) and that sort of feature would definitely be of interest to fans. On the other side of things, finding fans who already do it could certainly help with prop/set design. Neat stuff, and can't wait to see what you do with it!

You bet.

Iv already tied in with a local "steampunk" film festival this fall, Ill get the data on who\how to submit your short for viewing.

It's why until the current film I have always thrown little Lovecraft touches in my films. Audiences starved for content will eat up anything you give them. It opens up a whole subculture with a built in interest in your film.
