Making a soap opera

I live in Nigeria and I am just entering the film making field. (I am currently the Founder and Director of a theatre group in my university, http://www.tansiantheatre.com/).
The first major work I want to do immediately after my graduation (a year from now) is an epic soap opera for the TV.
What are the most important things i have to know before venturing into this big project?
