Job Offer

I'm starting to look for a job, and I got my last one from craigslist (believe it or not).

I'm pretty good with seeing scams (most look to get your SS#) But, this one has me stumped.

The phone number he gave me is from CA. He says he's in Australia opening an art gallery. The job description is basically I answer his calls, buy him supplies (he gives me the money) and do other odd jobs. There's no interview, and I get paid weekly.

He's asking for my name/address/telephone number and that's it. I start immediately.

If this isn't a scam, it's a decent proposal. Anyone ever get an offer like this?

Never got this particular offer. But if I were to hire someone, I'd ask for a resume, which would have all that information in it. Before I went into an extended conversation about the actual hiring procedure, I'd also ask for a few references from the applicant, who I would call to make sure I was about to start paying a reasonably responsible person, in whom other people had confidence. I would say scam.

Never heard of this one before either. :hmm:

Like trueindie mentioned, unless he's given a decent reason for hiring you then I can't really see why it would be legit.
I for one wouldn't trust some random person to effectively answer my calls or to spend my money on supplies (instead of booze or weed!)

I thought about the resume myself. All the info he asked for is on it. Maybe if I responded with the info, he would have responded I forgot to get your SS#. I sent him a few questions regarding how he would get me the money to buy his merchandise. I want to see if and what he answers. It's interesting, because I can't figure out the gimmick. I love stuff like this.

I can't believe how many people get fooled by the send me $3000 and I'll give you millions. There's two suckas born every second.

Sure sounds interesting.

You buy him supplies? Not with your own money, of course.
He sends you money and then you buy them. And send the
supplies to him? He, of course, pays for the all the shipping.
Up front. You don't front him any money at all.

I wonder why he needs someone in NY to buy supplies for
him and ship them. But I guess you'll find out soon. I'm sure
at some point he will ask you to spend money - it will be
interesting to find out how he tries to get money from you.

One possibility I could see from the description is that you end up acting as a remailer for him. He purchases stuff online with stolen credit cards, has it shipped to your address, and then has you ship it to him. There'll be some seemingly legit reason to do this - i.e. to avoid paying high import duties if he ordered the stuff directly. And he may actually be fine with paying you for the shipping up front - it's a small amount compared to what he'd make selling the merchandise, and a small price to pay to have you as a buffer between him and any authorities.

Yep. I doubt he'll answer my response. But, I can tell you one thing, a dime will never leave my pocket.

I'm thinking it might have more to do with answering his calls. Since this is a work from home, they have to call my house. That might be where the shady part comes in.

This is the e-mail. I've actually straightened it out a little (removed the salary part). For a guy running his own business, his writing skills are worse then mine. That's saying something. But, I've had bosses that are even worse then this.

Another possibility is he'll want you to set up a separate bank account - for accounting purposes, of course. He'll have access to the account, which as your "business partner" gives him access to all of the information you gave the bank in order to open it.

"There's something rotten in the state of Denmark", or Australia, in this case.

If he's truly opening a business he'll have a business manager and/or legal representation; say you want your lawyer to contact his legal or financial representation to set up all the paperwork. You'll know rather quickly what the story really is.

If you responded to that, and gave him the information he was asking for, you have already been scammed.

Love it!

This guy is going to trust a complete stranger he found on craigslist to
receive payments from his clients and pay his bills.

So true CF. That is all the info a scammer needs to get the ball rolling
on ID theft.

Aspiring: I answered his ad for a data entry/office clerk (Chelsea NY) on craigslist. Like I wrote originally, my last real job I got off craigslist.

The scam I see the most, they ask you to visit a site, fill out an application. After you've done all that, they want credit references through the company of their choice. But, they'll repay you once you're hired.

Cracker: I didn't fill out that piece at the bottom. But, he has it from my resume. That's what is weird. He didn't ask for a SS#. Anyone can go on line and find someone's name address and telephone number. ( I love people who put where they're at on facebook. They should just write, I'm not at home come rob me)

My phone is with Comcast and it's unlimited in the US. He has my number if he looked at my resume or my original e-mail. Is there any reason I should not call the number? It begins with 714 which I think is CA. I want to know what the scam is. I also want to do it when Karen isn't around, so when I start yelling at the guy she doesn't hear.

How strange is it: 714 CA #, he's in Australia, and he's posting a job in NYC.

Anything asking for this info up front is a scam. 100%

Seen that exact text in suspicious housing ads around here all the time.

It's common for scammers to have ordinary people "buy" supplies from somewhere and then have them ship that "purchased" product to another location. When in fact the item is stolen and it's just a method for the scammer to get the product shipped without them actually doing the shipping.

I watched this scam on Dateline last year.

The "employer" and "client" are working for the same people and the goods are stolen. The "middle man" is then the normal/ordinary person so when the police or whomever track the package it leads back to that person instead of the scammers.

In this day and age, why would anyone need a local agent? Maybe to receive the goods, but to order it??? And there must be lots of shipping and warehousing companies that send products in the proper manner, without someone working on a part-time basis to do it from his house.

The out of country personal assistant jobs are pretty much all scams. Like it's been said, anyone who is actually wealthy has enough business sense to conduct an interview, ask for resume, etc before they let you handle their money.

That said, I've had many good experiences on craigslist with classified ads selling, buying, casting and even taking a freelance job or two. Just have to be careful what you answer and have a separate email address for the spam haha.

WOW. Check this out. I got this one today from another craigslist ad.It would be much funnier if I didn't need a job.

Hello ,

Thank you for your signified interest in the position I advertised. I
will explain the logistics of the job as detailed as possible, I am
sorry if you find it somewhat lengthy but I feel I should let you have
an idea of what you will be doing for me.I have very tight-fitted
schedules, which I must admit I find difficult to keep up with, and
for this reason, I need a personal assistant who will help me with
some of the little details of my schedules; I used to have someone in
this position but she returned to her home country to assume control
over a family business that was left for her to handle after her
father’s demise. As much as I do not want to use her as a yardstick to
measure who fills in her position, I would reiterate, however, that
she was very excellent, prompt, smart, and courteous in her discharge
of duties – I am extremely proud of her work ethics.

All I need is someone who is efficient, timely, and most
importantly, someone who carries out instructions as outlined among
other things. I am Frank Wallace, 53 years old, originally from United
Kingdom, I moved to the United States about eight years ago, and no
doubt, I have been lovingly enjoying it here all the way. I am an
international businessman who deals in oil and gas ventures, and so
far, I have been involved in a lot of other ventures and businesses
which I have been very well successful at, all over the world from
Australia, to Europe,to The Middle East, and many other continents. As
I said earlier, I have a lot to handle and I need the service of a
personal assistant to handle some of the small tasks that I cannot
have time to oversee or monitor.

As my personal assistant, here are most of the works you will be
doing:• Running personal errands, like mailing off packages
(contents of which you will be aware of) and making calls from a phone
I will provide for you – you will also receive phone calls on the
number.Mainly business calls that you will be privy to. • Scheduling
programs, flights, meetings, and keeping me updated about them. These
activities’ details will be available to you the assignments are ready
for you to undertake. • Handling some of my financial activities –
paying some clients, receiving payments from clients, making donations,
depositing cash –on my behalf. Nonetheless, I am in Abu Dhabi, UAE,
for an oil seminar and will be heading off to Kuwait for another
workshop based on energy and gas;both these trips will take three
weeks altogether, and after then I will return Stateside. While I am
away, I have a number of tasks I want you to handle for me this week
and next, if you
will be available.

This will as well serve as a stable foundation to predicate our
working relations and ethics. Also, I will have you know that this
position is not office-based at the moment because of my incessant
trips but as soon as I settle in the next four weeks or there about, I
will have an office for you – I am also working on extending my
offices to various parts of the States soon as I finish perfecting my
merge with some other firms from London. But, for now, the tasks I will
have for you should not normally take you more than one or two hours
to completion depending on your time management skills. You may also
have something else doing on the side as you await my provision for a
permanent office for you.

As I was saying earlier, I would want us to start things as soon as
possible so I can test your diligence, efficiency, and promptness
towards all these. I would want to believe that you will be up for the
challenge, eventually, we should have a smooth working relationship
between us. The first assignment I have for you is to run a donation
to a cause: an orphanage home that I am very familiar with had told me
about a child that needs a brain surgery, and I have pledged to have a
donation sent to them in form of the payment method which they have
informed me about. Therefore, upon your confirmation of acceptance of
this job, I will instruct a client that owes me to write and send you
a cashier check, details of which I will furnish you with if and when
you have agreed to start this job. If you are willing to take up this
position, I will need you to send me the following information
accurately (this must also be the information where the Cashier check
will be sent):

Name –
Address –
City –
State –
Zip code –
Cell phone number –
E-mail address –
How often do you check your email in a day?----------

As soon as I receive these information, I will contact you immediately
with details of the task for the week. You should also know that you
will be paid weekly. Your basic weekly salary is $300.00 and there
will also be bonuses as from the second week, provided you have
handled the first assignment flawlessly.

God bless you tremendously

Thanks

Frank
