Hi, all! I shot and directed this short for this year's 48HFP. The heartbreaker was that I was over-confident about the time and my wife and I turned it in literally 1 minute late! Hence, we could show, but not compete. I've done the 48 six times and this was my first late project. On the other hand, we made a movie that I really like, so it's better to have done it, than not.

As for the production, I setup a huge fog tent, with an RV inside of it. I also have a 60' blue screen cloth, which went around the front and side.

Character - a baker.
Prop - family heirloom.
Line - "I've been thinking about this for a long time."
Genre- Fish Out Of Water

1 minute, what a jackass running the competition.

Reminds me of when I failed my motorcycle test, a 70 year old dude on the stopwatch said I was 1/10 of a second too slow.

Dude you're 70 how fast do you think your reaction time is on that stopwatch?

Whatever. Would have helped if he actually told me I needed to make the corner fast, I had no idea you could fail for going too slow! I thought I would fail if I went too fast and be accused of driving recklessly. Of course passed it easily once I knew the grading criteria.

Being that close sucks, but that was my fault, and honestly, it got me thinking about all the spots we could have made up that minute (and more). That's info I can apply to any future production. The 48HFP producer was very cool. The whole time constraint is what it's all about. It's a lot like filming a commercial that has to be shot in a day or two.

Out of 33 movies, 10 were late and 2 didn't finish. Awards or not, I worked with 3 actors that I had not used before. When I get to producing my next feature, I will definitely be thinking about them. It was a great experience.

Hey, the real world is like that. When I worked for MTWO we put out "cattle calls" for music for commercials, theme songs for shows, etc. It was not unusual for the composers to have less than 36 hours, and less than 12 hours was not an unusual occurance; this was pre-internet - they would need to make the last Fed-Ex. We had 10 hours to audition a few dozen submissions, select the three or four for the client reel, sequence them, run off copies (cassettes), package them and get them to Fed_Ex ourselves. When Disney calls being on time is a good habit to have.

I'm sure that delivery times are tighter than ever in the computerized, internet age, and quality expectations from the demos is also probably much higher as well.

I agree. I've been on some recent jobs like that. That's one of the reasons I like timed fests. "Time" is such an equalizer. A lot of my "artist" filmmaker friends won't even try 48, because they can't stand not perfecting every shot.
 
Nice work Mike. Too bad you did'nt make the deadline. I worked on a 24 several years ago and we did not make it either for reasons.
