Is working with a shitty artist a bad idea?

ok I was wondering if i did a music video for shity artist/band will that reflect on me as a director even if the music video comes out good? I was thinking some people might see the video and think just because the artist isnt good that maby my film company wont be good?

What are your guys thoughts on this?

In the beginning, take what you can get and minimize your name in the credits. Later, once you're on your feet, you can pick and choose.

But even if the music is terrible but i make the video really good, should i still not want people to see it?

Why create something you don't want people to see? I understand you don't like the music, but I don't see how that's going impact you now, or in the future. It actually doesn't make much sense to be honest.

In general, I'd say limit how much your name is associated with crap. Corporate jobs have me making terrible stuff all the time, I just try to keep people from finding it through searches. The big deal is that when someone good does try to hire you, they don't want to see a previous work that is bad. Could a terrible band ruin a viewers enjoyment of a good music video, absolutely. Will people see your skill if you do a good job, yes. Would I film a porn and then show it to people because I got the lighting just right? No. I wouldn't film it at all. Talent aside, you don't want to really associate yourself with low quality people or products when you can help it.

If you need some money and experience, just use a pseudonym. If you can do better, do better.

That actualy makes alot of sence! I got some thinking to do now lol. Depending on how the video comes out maby ill just use a pseudonym. Unless he makes a better song and wants to do it for a good song

Why is the band shitty? Are they bad? Are they just not to your tastes? Why are you doing the video? Are they paying you? Do you owe one of them a favor? Do you just want the experience?

As people have said, it's easy enough to keep your name off of it, and just use footage without the music for your portfolio. That said, there are hundreds of thousands of bands around. I'm sure you could find one that is a) better and b) more to your personal tastes.

Well the music is badly recorded and on top of it the vocalist is just not that good. Reason im doing it is that the vocalist is my friend =/

Think about this:

I don't think Rebecca Black's DP or director for her video "Friday" has gotten any offers from larger record labels so far...

But who cares about that and let's be practical on this one - I'd only be worried if this video was going to garner more than 200 hits on you-tube and from the sound of it I personally doubt it will have those kinds of legs (no offense to the artist and band).

If it's just a friendly thing like that "you're beautiful" video posted here earlier, is anyone who would offer you a significantly paying job really going to notice it?

Let's be real, here. I say do it and help them out - the worst thing you'll gain is experience...

Yeah im going to do it! i mean he has a bunch of songs on youtube with out videos and they have about 2k veiws each so i guess its better then me not doing it and getting 0 veiws right!?

What I meant was that it's most likely not going to blow up and hit 2 million views to the point of people wondering "I wonder who did the cinematography on this video!"... I mean no offense but I think it's perfectly safe to do it and not have it bite you later...

Plus, on those videos you just don't put your name on it like others have suggested...

It's experience! If you turn down these projects you'll never get to DO anything! :)

Alright thanks! I wont put my name in it but if they come out good wouldnt i want my name in it? because even if one person out of the 2000 that saw it think wow maby he could do a video for me? wouldnt it be worth it?

Hmm. Sure, why not?

Do whatcha want!!! I think that's a good idea, then - honestly, I personally don't think it could hurt!

Realistically speaking, the only people who will want you to do a video for them are some other local bands that will be able to get in contact with you via word of mouth.

Out of curiosity, where in Florida? Panhandle, Central, or South?

EDIT: I think you're overthinking things. I doubt anyone of real importance will see this video. Just make the damn video, he's your friend, and you could use the experience. It's a no-brainer.
