Hey!

Well, I'm a student at Berkeley High School, and I'm 16. I am an activist for human rights of every kind, from the atrocities of the Sudan genocide to the homeless and poverty stricten city of Berkeley. I host a fundraiser/ dance benefit every year to raise money to help the people of Darfur, but I want to work on a project closer to home...
My new project I want to pursue is a documentary about the causes and effects of homeless-ness, and the emotional struggle involved in becoming homeless, along with the future of our nation's homeless society.
Here's the thing... I have little filmaking experience, and I don't know where to start. I've begun researching the homeless situation in the bay area, and information on making a documentary, but I don't know where to go from there- any ideas on where I can find a film crew, DV cameras, good editing systems, mics, flood lights, etc...

Thanks!
Lily

Welcome.

There was a very interesting documentary-series on in England last winter. It basically placed these four "celebrities" on the streets, homeless, to see how they would deal with the situation, and how they'd interact with other homeless people. Also, for them to see how it is to be treated like a homeless person. I can't remember what it was called, but it was very interesting to watch.

Sorry I cant help with your resource problem, but I can suggest sticking up flyers, or posting on craigslist. Maybe posting ads in your local papers or magazines.

Absolutely.

There are many students at Berkeley High School
who have DV cameras and all the other equipment
you need. Contact the head of the Digital Photography
department. You could even contact The Department
of Film & Media over at U.C. Berkeley. Contact Barbara
Hillman at the Berkeley Film Office if your school or
the university can't help you.

There are a LOT of filmmakers in your area who would
love to help you on a documentary about the causes
and effects of homelessness.
