editing documentary help

Hello all. Consider me a simpleton and a neophyte. I have started a sports documentary and I have many questions. Namely, how do I create material that is not filmed. I am referring to showing a map and having the map outline areas of importance. I also wanted to put up facts on the screen.
Something like Gasland, wher ehe had the map uf the USA and then the red dots to show where drilling was done. How do I do that? Whats that called and what program can do that?
IN addition, if I wanted to use footage of sports and still photos, can I take that from the internet, youtube for exmaple, and show it in my film? Is this allowed from a copyright perspective? I am in Canada.
Thanks

There are several creative ways to do this, depending on what software you are using. It's not difficult. The hardest part is creating your art-assets beforehand - well, hard for me 'cos I can't draw. :)

From a copyright perspective, the odds are good that you'll be taking copyrighted material.

There is a growing amount of Creative Commons material that you might find (usually free to use, with certain demands - like a mention in the credits, etc), and there's also a tonne of Public Domain material that you can get at various sites, including Archive.org. (Not *everything* there is PD, but so much is. Just check first, before using. Prelinger Archive (at Archive.org) is all PD for sure)

Thanks. I appreciate your help. Very kind. What are some examples of the programs that can do that? I have the ideas all very clear in my head, but dont know the process of creating it for the screen. And thanks for the pD help :)

Well, I don't know how it looks in your head but you can animate in"

Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, Premiere, After FX, GIMP, name anything similar...

...or if just a still frame depiction, heck, even MS Paint would get the job done.

The answer would get an easier answer if we know what software you were actually using, and working toward a solution from that direction. There's just too many ways to do it. :)

Well, I wanted to add a screen with simple texts where I would provide facts about events and ask the viewer questions. Also have maps and creative sports scenes- animated- but the text was the most important.
