Does the character know he/she is in danger or not?

Music greats suspense beautifully, What builds up suspense more than music slowly creeping up on you faster and faster?
<object width="400" height="292" ><...e" width="400" height="292"></embed></object>I would say music should be one of the first steps. Sometimes the music is so quiet that it is barely there. You can feel the viewer lean forward to hear/see better.
When the music stops abruptly, suspense builds before it starts again, too.

Watch some old silent movies (Keaton, Chaplin, Lloyd) for ideas on suspense. Agreed, sound and music are important, but editing plays a big part in what the viewer deems suspenseful.
Nosferatu does a good job as well for no sound.

thanks, it is a object lesson in suspense..
hiding information is often the root of suspense.... for example, hiding information from the viewer as to "whats behind that door" is suspenseful, if you reveal to the viewer whats behind the door, but don't reveal it to the character thats about to turn the door knob, you can turn suspense into dread!

I hate to nit-pick, but score/music is sound.
Well... obviously, Mr. Nitpicker. 
What I'm getting at is about editing. There is no sound in editing. Cut for cut, suspense can be created via the right combination of shots. Indeed. Music/score=sound. Agreed.

Agreed.I love the way they substitute cymbals for waves at the beginning. By the way, this clip would be a lot less suspenseful without the music. : )
