Are we crazy?

I spend a lot of time boasting that I live in the greatest country in the world.

Tonight, for the third night in a row, we are burning down our own capital

I don't know what to say to this international community that can communicate the insanity that has gripped a fairly small group of people over here and how much damage they're doing. If the American media are reporting that this has anything to do with 'justice' or 'budget cuts' you can laugh in their faces. This is a series of opportunistic attacks by people who like seeing burning buildings on TV and have no respect for the authority that is designed to keep them safe. There's plenty wrong with the police force in the UK but, fundamentally, it's not corrupt and doesn't use excessive force and, even if it did, that wouldn't be justification for the level of destruction we're witnessing...

:(

Crazy stuff indeed, Nick. Hope none if it is going on too close to where you are, and that you're keeping safe. It does seem like the situation is a catalyst that is firing up a lot of pent up rage and frustration that has little or nothing to do with the actual situation (and plenty of crimes of opportunity as well). Or at least, that's how it appears to an outsider.

Stay safe!

And all because of the scum of the country!

Get the chavs of the street! Lock them up, better yet, shoot them, so we don't have to pay for their time in Prison! We are a civilized country, we don't have to stand up for our rights, like the middle east countries, no, the people go out on the street for a new HD Ready Plasma TV!

These are the kind of people who have no outlook for the future! They steal, they destroy businesses, which have been set up by People, for many many years and they burn them down in minutes!

SCUM! Get them out of here! Shoot them or do whatever you want with them, but don't leave them on the street!

This is where a civilised city is at! Its crazy! Its like a little war! http://yfrog.com/ken77p

There is no reason why sane Londoners can't have a counter protest to silence the voice of a minority, unless, of course, this minority is actually the majority.

There are a series of very good reasons.

1.) This is not a protest, this is a riot.
2.) The people who are against this is are fundamentally peaceful, the people for it are not.
3.) Counter protests would only make it much harder for the police to do their job.
4.) Counter protests would undermine the widespread condemnation.

It is a minority but a minority consisting of violent criminals with no respect for property. It's up to the police to tackle them, any vigilante justice would only exacerbate things and muddy the, already unclear, waters.

Yea its nuts, I personally think the police in this situation should use more force as they are causing a lot of damage. However I do understand why they don't, very much a dammed if you do dammed if you don't situation for the met. Waiting for the people burning cars, property etc to go away and getting them later isn't the way to go. Hopefully it wont happen tomorrow as well.

Yep, I agree.

In retrospect it's easy to say that more force should've been used on the first day but no one imagined that it was going to continue for three nights. I think using a water cannon would constitute 'appropriate force'.

But world, take note that despite all this carnage we still haven't used tear gas. If there's one thing we've got going for us it's a respect for human rights.

Yup water cannons would be a valid use of force and perhaps an ideal one at that as it could be used to push the people away from their targets. It may not be used now but I think after review it could be used in future if this happens again.

lol Phil in some ways I agree, makes me mad watching this. But to make everyone happy you have to use minimal force

I am, as surely much of us "Staties" are, sorry for these ridiculous behaviors you're having to endure (and pay for).

I don't think you appreciate just HOW MANY stupid, pecker-brained people there are running around the planet.
Only recently has social media outpaced porn on the internet.
People are pretty laughably stupid.
When observations match predictions you know you have a good model.
I predict... There are lots of stupid people.
I observe... More Emma Watson photoshop porn than charts diagramming the inverse relationship between federal and state taxes.

There are perhaps a lot more stupid people than you're comfortable believing are free to drive, vote, & procreate.

And now it's spread up to Birmingham! Luckily, I live far enough out of the city that non of it should affect me. This really is ridiculous...

The situation in Birmingham looks really nasty. Then again if I lived in Birmingham...

In all seriousness I hope this blows itself out overnight.

Everything is relative. And relatively, compared to other countries, Nick's right. Most of the UK police is not corrupt and most of the time they do not use excessive force.
