    copyright expiration for music?

General rule in the UK is that copyright (in the composition) expires 70 years after the death of the author. It's the same for recordings, but you aren't going to find many recordings over 70 years old!

    Using a pseudonym

Why wouldn't you want your name to stand out? Seems people would be more likely to remember it! Unless it's Roger Young-Boyes or something. (I actually once had to call someone with that name when I worked at a call centre) :)

Set extensions with a matte painting

Not bad, but the blacks on the castle and nearby mountain are too black - it's quite a distance away and as things go into the distance the perceived contrast is reduced (atmospheric perspective). Having the very high contrast there looks a bit unnatural. The edge around the added elements looks...

    Shop names

The script's written, bar some inevitable further revisions because I can never leave anything alone :) I'm in pre-production at the moment, its cast and we have most of the (motley) crew. Hope to shoot Spring/early Summer and have it out by the end of the year, preferably for our local horror...

    Rendering an audition video.

+1 for vimeo - render out from vegas to mp4, upload to vimeo (you can upload one HD video per week for free), the quality is pretty decent, you can protect it with a password and there will be no waiting at all at the other end. And if they really want to they can download the original mp4 file...

    Shop names

No worries wheatgrinder - I know it's not like the best name ever, but there was some thought put into it :) I'll try and come up with something better anyway, but having read up on it a bit it seems that trademarks are only infringed if the one in the film could reasonably be mistaken for the...

"Power Up" Sunday Feb 12, 2011

Me too, the trailer looked really interesting!

    Shop names

Wow, that's a little harsh. I thought it was quite a good name. :( I like it because it hints at survival of the fittest / competition for a mate in evolution. As the story is about a love triangle its kind of fitting. Probably no-one will care of course but I was more just curious as to what...

    Shop names

So in my script there's a vegan healthfood shop called "Natural Selection". Turns out there's one or two actual healthfood shops called this in real life, according to Google. Is it legally OK to use that name for the shop in my short or do I need to change it? I imagine its quite difficult to...

    watch Anamnesis

Liked it a lot! Loved the subway train in the cupboard! I did think it could have been slightly shorter, I get that you were going for a slow dreamlike feel and it did work but I found myself wanting it to move just a little bit quicker at some points. Camerawork and lighting looked great...

    watch Short: Wake Up (Teaser)

Pretty effective, like the sound. Not 100% sure about the "Wake Up!" vocal at the end though it sounds a little comical almost, and definitely don't like the font / kerning for the title - looks very amateurish whereas the rest looks quite professional.

watch Mock 80's Mexican Action Short Film! Please watch!

I love bad 80s movies, and this was a good pastiche. Really professionally put together especially on such a small budget. Music was awesome. Only criticism I'd have of the production quality is that the CG elements stood out as not-very-convincingly-80s. The trouble with pastiche is that these...

Does your movie have a facebook page?

Liked! Is it going to be a musical like the original Oliver? Please say yes :) Here's mine, all likes much appreciated: https://www.facebook.com/primecutsmovie

watch A short comedy: The night of the falling star

Loving the effects video - the smoke in the "red alert" section was particularly effective I thought! How did you do that?

    "Clean" OTS vs "dirty" OTS

Thanks for that! Really useful when people can post good examples to learn from - I can never seem to remember which bit of which movie I should be looking at for reference :) Great scene, obviously. Interesting that in a lot of the shots only a very small amount of the closer actor is visible...

    "Clean" OTS vs "dirty" OTS

OK thanks guys! I like the idea of using it to signify something perhaps, even if its just as simple as clean = true POV, dirty = bit more subjective. As what is seen from differing POVs is quite important in my film that might make some kind of cinematic language sense...

    watch Replica- An Experimental Film

Didn't really know what was going on, but can say for certain that that was one creepy bunny.

    My first action movie

Quite professionally done, but why do I care who wins? Without any investment in the characters action is a fairly hollow experience - unless it is just so completely balls out fantastic and incredible that you are blown away by the sheer bombasticness of it. But some guys shooting at each other...

watch "Tree Frogs" My first short film

Quite nicely shot and lit despite some camera wobble, sound wasn't great (quite hard to hear sometimes, and a couple of really clipped bits). Performances started a bit limp but got a lot better as it went on. The hitman was pretty good. (Hitman-themed shorts are a little too common by the way...

watch A short comedy: The night of the falling star

Aw, thanks! Should be done by the end of this year fingers crossed :) - Night of The Falling Star was really inspiring actually as its one of the few shorts I've seen that is of a similar length and narrative complexity to Prime Cuts and also dealt with more technically challenging stuff than I...
