video How would you make this trailer better?

Hey my filmmaking friends its Asher here in the chat today, hope y’all having a good time. The question of this post is how would you make this trailer better.

So I’ve made a trailer for a record labels Album coming out soon. I got together visuals from most of the artists worldwide that are on the album, I opted to make it really short. But was it too short? Keep in mind I was given pretty much full creative control for this trailers production (within reason). The main goals I had in mind was to present some of the artists, explain how the album is shared between artists in few words, and to give credit to those working on it. Release date in the title.

What I would love to receive from y’all is helpful criticisms, feedback and ideas for making trailers. I did have some doubts in the back of my mind like is this too short? Is the concept of multiple artists sharing the album conveyed as best as can be? Is there any way you would do this that you think would work better. Im only 18 years old so this kind of help is really useful.

Thank you all for any help.

Note: Some asked if the music in this trailer is from the album, to which the answer is yes. It is an original track coming out with The Watchtower Album along with 23 other great artists tracks. Also the dinosaur figure, Star Wars visuals and many more visuals are originally shot for this trailer. Some shots are from artists or people involved like myself that are from the past to represent themselves. None of this is “public stock footage.”

Also that dinosaur and the silhouette character are from your movie. (As well as the synth music.) Why are you recycling these images and sounds when someone hired you to make something original for them?

Well this is a compilation record so I'd suggest... playing some of the ACTUAL MUSIC ON THE RECORD! LOL! Gotta be honest I've never seen a record being advertised, and the music playing is different music. I mean, wtf lol.
Hi I hope you are well today. Yes the track in the trailer is on the Album. Is there something that made you assume it wasn’t? Others have also raised this question so perhaps I should made this absolutely clear in future? I assumed people would know, like with other album trailers that the music is on the album. Your feedback is good though as having more tracks would actually be a good thing to portray some more musical diversity. Sadly for this job not many tracks on the album were available to be teased but I had this one from the album available. Thanks for the heads up though I’ll say the music is in the album next time I just thought its assumed it is. Thank you.

Hey bud
The different shots all seemed so disjointed. Kind of like a collection of unrelated stock footage.
Hi my friend, thanks for the good criticism. At the start of the trailer I wrote “crazy music videos“ assuming audiences would know the following visuals then on are from all the “crazy music videos” on the album. I assume from your criticism here that, that title card at the start was not enough to convey that Intended message? Perhaps a voice over, or an artist to camera saying a few lines? Would work better? The audience is intended to think from the start “these music videos for these tracks are gonna be so expansive and creative” something like that. Diverse in genre rather than disjointed. But all this conveyed in a short way. Thank you I appreciate it.

The dinosaur shots are actually not from my movie funnily enough aha, the shot in that movie a while ago was a stop motion video at another location. The shots for this trailer were custom filmed with my new camera and lens. Also, for the trailer all the artists on the album, or anyone involved directly in the album is “presented” in a sequence. That includes my contribution, which I used the silhouette shot to represent myself. But also that shot is not directly from my past movie it’s taken from the raw and re-made. But finally, a few months ago because I was unhappy with them - I made all my old movies private so basically they don’t exist anymore to the public. I did this cause I wanted a fresh start to the whole fantasy movie saga I’ve been doing most my life, a full reboot if you will. But this time having all the experience of the past. So from now on I’ll either be using those past visuals either for my personal logos, occasional representations like in this trailer, or in any behind the scenes.

For this trailer though, the shots of the dinosaurs in nature were original. Other shots from artists were also either original or from their past - to represent themselves. The New Zealand visuals I showed here that I filmed a few years ago - are teasing my return trip to New Zealand on the 27th December. For 3 months I’ll be filming music videos there, i had visuals of New Zealand that I filmed, so I used them to tease the new footage that will be captured soon. A very accurate foreshadowing of what is to come.

Many limitations came with this trailer production, a budget of $0 Unfortunately was one of them.

The soundtrack..... is this song on the album? I want to hear songs from this album.

This is how Raoul sinier does it.
Hi I hope you are well, thank you for taking the time out of your day to write this reply and find that video. Yes the music in the trailer is on the album as an original track. I personally thought this would be assumed like with most album trailers. Is there something about this trailer that makes you think it isn’t from the album? Perhaps I should make that absolutely clear in future. Regardless thank you my friend, others too have asked this question.

Sounds like your movie soundtrack or the music you use in your trailers.
Ahh I see I understand. Just to confirm this track is new and original. It is produced by me to be on this album with the other artists which Is also why I had permission to tease it. I didn’t want to mention that it was mine because this isn’t a promotion thread rather one for feedback and criticism. So mentioning the album track teased is my musical creation would not be appropriate for this thread as this is trailer editing focused. Thanks my friend for taking the time out of your day to sus out the trailer I appreciate the effort and criticism.

I think I get what this is. The "record label" is you correct? This is my guess. You contacted some artists on youtube and told them you were making a compilation album and would also make a music video for each of them, and everything is to be released on your YT channel. These are the artists that got back to you and took you up on your offer. Am I right?

Close guess my friend, except the label isn’t mine and it wasn’t me recruiting artists. Rather I joined with a record label called 25 To Life Records, I am one of the artists with many others who are on the album. I thought I would make a little trailer to help promote It, each artist tries to help promote the album as a whole. Since I usually work on films and film trailers, it was an interesting exploration to make a trailer for an album instead and Ofcourse make a song. You can find the record label on Facebook if your interested my friend.

Something that I would notice right off the bat is that there are quite a few people here trying to get their name out through this project. It might be a cool idea to feature the names of at least the top acts on the compellation, if not all of them. I mean as the bulk of the ad, not as a frame at the end. Also, I wonder why there is filler footage like the SWBF2 footage with the alpha channel smoke jets? It looks cool, but feels like it's stealing focus from your core message which should be "look at this cool album that has all these exiting artists on it.

Here's my suggestion, get a photograph from each band, roto the images. do some animated text work, like simple AE project stuff, and have it all work as one theme, moving at a quick pace. You probably can't get footage from all these bands, and if you did, it wouldn't match, so that's why I suggest motion graphics and roto photos. Everyone has a photo of themselves at least. It would allow consistent design.

At the end of the ad should be a call to action, not a copyright notice. Leave your audience with "Drive out and buy this right now, before we run out!!!!" rather than "violators will be prosecuted"

Music track should just be the strongest clip on the album. If that's what's playing, then ok.
