suggestion What do you want to see?

Does a database of free music and sound effects interest anyone? We have tons of composers here, but one central place to download, and ability to comment and review on each download. What the composers would get out of it would be custom work on scores, and selling more elaborate sound effects, etc.

Yes/No?

I was thinking of what free stuff interests filmmakers. Legal forms, etc. Not much to be honest. Software can be found with a google. But a centralized music db... I think could be nice.

Good idea. Not that I'm a film maker but a movie clip database for random context building scenes, that are difficult to film to good effect, might be useful too. i.e. A night shot of a city, a snake in the desert, a spectacular sunset, nice drone footage etc.

One other thing I would personally like to see on the site is more visibility for collaboration opportunities. Not like LinkedIn exactly, but a facility to search by location perhaps what skills people have on offer and if they are open to projects etc.

What about extending the idea.

There's a marketplace for people buying stock footage/music/sfx/vfx. What about selling stock footage provided by the indietalk community... with a split of the profits of course.

Adding to the stock video/stuff idea. There used to be a deal at Videoblocks & audioblocks where you could get one of those all you could eat deals for $99/year. They've changed to storyblocks but I think they upped the price.

Put something together and sell access for something like $40/year and put yourself on the map for this kind of stuff.

Like nerdeo, they do collaboration for indie projects.. I really like the database idea...One thing I use sometimes is the books feature in Google..Just use a double quoted "phrase" and search through examples of that phrase used in books and such so you can see the context...

Sorry to hop in here without any good suggestions, but I think a relevant question is: what do you, IT, want Indietalk to be? What's important to you?

It still provides a great resource for filmmakers all around the world, even though the last decade, I guess, has seen its market share steadily eroded by like Facebook groups and subReddits. But there's still a good community here and a huge amount of historic archive content. Does it need to be constantly competing and innovating? I guess that's something that only you can decide; it's your baby!

I hope that one day we hear Indietalk thanked in an Oscars acceptance speech – it would be well deserved, given how many careers it's helped launch.

For me, I would consider balancing the Indietalk forum and community with a more static publication. I think you could integrate them quite well, harvest some of the expertise from the forum to create a more SEO friendly, curated publication (could also be podcast, YouTube channel...etc) that people could get vital information from without feeling like they have to sign-up to the forum. I'd guess that people are much more hesitant to sign up to forums in 2021 than they were back when I joined in like 2009/10. Just a guess!

This mission statement from day 1 has been a habitat where newbies and professionals can co-exist, and a place where advice can be trusted. We have not waivered from that. This is a rare place with a low volume of trolling and a high volume of trust. I am proud of that. And that is not on me, that is on you guys and gals. But features are a different animal. It's about tools you may feel are missing. Tools to enhance your experience.

I think it's a great suggestion.
I'd like to see the userbase grow. That's what most of my original suggestions were based around.

I love the idea of a certain area containing free to use music, and also I love the idea of having a tab with loads of free to use sound affects gathered together for filmmakers. Also not just sound affects, there could be visual affects such as snow, rain, smoke affects gathered too In a VFX tab. As was suggested above, And here’s the kicker though it woudnt have to be paid, for a filmmaker to use them they have to have joined the site for a certain time. As time goes on and they stay, more of the library of sound, music, vfx is unlocked. So the site can grow as well in members from it. If that’s what you want to happen. And maybe each member has to make one or two posts to unlock said library in the first place.

Another idea, maybe on the front page there could be a little helpful tab to new filmmakers saying: Are you new to Filmmaking?
It could lead to some kind of fixed page/library on the site where playlists of YouTube content teaching filmmaking is listed. Each playlist dealing with a different aspect of filmmaking. Also on the page there could be loads of great filmmaking quotes everywhere or little paragraphs every now and then from the experienced members here. Giving advice to new filmmakers. Just an idea :)
And like the affects library it may also require entry to access.

I have a new idea of how to use the gallery. It's only for tutorials and instructional videos so it is more of a curated repository, and the narrative shorts, trailers, and such, are posted on the forum (in a category I have yet to create, but it will have thumbs up and down like youtube). More info later but I think this model works. The forum is best for the new works, and the gallery is best when seeking something out, so it can be a good place to look up "how to do this" etc. Since YT is full of great tutes that allow you to share/embed we can create our own little organized section with categories etc.

Honestly, I think you guys would be better having a Discord. Seems to be the way most people chat and congregate these days. Me personally, I'm not so great at it. But what's nice is you can easily chat/voice chat/share things smoother than old school forums.
