cinematography cheep director's eyepiece?

ware would a guy who doesn't want to spend a lot of money find a director's eyepiece? they aren't even on ebay and i don't really feel like dropping 200 bucks.

Interesting Q, though. I've never actually worked with a director who's used one, but I've seen a few DPs with one.

seems that once I started looking for "view finders" and not "eye pieces" I discovered more options.. look at this widget. its like a still camera flash shoe viewfinder.. crazy..

i just need to to know what prime lens to call for i'm going to be the DP on a fiend's short coming up. yah the cheapest one i could find was that mini sized one on the lanyard. i guess it's something you only buy once in your life so you don't see it on ebay. but yah i should use a SLR camera with a zoom lens and just convert the measurements for the size of the camera's sensor chip.

I'm still framing with my hands, but i can't say I'm not checking out a couple of these suggestions.

Also, I've used an old SLR in previous shoots, it was great, i just lost the strap and ended up forgetting i had the thing. Operation 'locate my SLR' is a go!

I guess some people have a much better power of "abstraction" then others. Most directors are able to run the entire film on their head like their brains are made of film, and its really easy for them to visualize what they are trying to accomplish without having to look through an eye piece or a viewfinder. Its not the case with me, and this little device really makes a difference.

I've got a free iPhone app from Panavision that lets me choose various aspect ratios and frame up a shot. There's also a not-so-cheap app (about $10-15 I think) that lets you simulate different focal lengths on various film/sensor sizes. Nothing like as versatile as a proper director's viewfinder, but it's always with me and is very useful on location scouts.
