You Just Never Know

Yesterday we held auditions for the role of Shari. She's a lesbian who has the hots for her room mate Nancy. All the auditioners were informed of this.

INT. NANCY’S APARTMENT - DAY
Nancy still in her pajamas does some THROAT EXERCISES, while standing in a meditative position.
She takes three deep breathes, then starts kick boxing the air.

Shari exits her bedroom and has to dodge Nancy’s foot.

NANCY
Sorry.

SHARI
You know what you will have to do if you
ever connect? ... With a smile.

The four women we had come in ALL asked the same exact question. They didn't understand the line "With a smile."

For some reason, the only two people who got it were me and the Producer. It just seems like such an easily understood line.

.....uhm..
....what?

is "with the smile" a punch line or something?

i dont understand shari's line at all.

if only u and the producer get the joke - thats not good, unless you re making this movie just for yourself lol

I would understand it perfectly if it was an action.
But if it is a line of dialogue then i can only deduce that Shari is saying Nancy will have to have an "intimate" moment with her AND she'll have to like it (as in do it with a smile.)

I'm guessing it's meant to be flirtatious, so I’d amend it to:

SHARI
(Flirtatiously) You know what you will have to do if you
ever connect?

Should help clear up the intent. :)

Mouth to mouth if Nancy kicks Shari in the head and knocks her out?

Which... really doesn't require M2M, but it was a passing remark, so I wouldn't hold anyone to any proper protocol.

FWIW, Shari really needs to work on her innuendo. ;)

As for the dialogue that's exactly what she's saying.
Wow.
Get kicked in the head. Go straight to GoG action.
I woulda missed that opportunity IRL.

I'm gonna try that at work.
Kick a few girls in the head.
See if we can get something going.

Just giving you a hard time, US.
(And I don't want any BoB action as a result, either. Just thought I'd make that clear. )

So, without the dialogue how would you have Shari show this?

As for the dialogue that's exactly what she's saying.

You actors do this, not you. In the story we should already know they are together, are hot for each other, etc.. Just let her deliver the line.. the actress will feel the "innuendo" and it will work (that certain look is all thats needed) .. naturally..

SHARI
You know what you will have to do if you
ever connect...

The actors will FEEL and show the sexual innuendo.. otherwise your writing on the nose..

Keep it in the subtext...

I would have Shari smile and say, "If you want to connect with me, you know there are other ways..."

That's good. But, a little too cutsy. Shari's pretty brash.

Wheat: For these ladies (two were very good) there was too much subtext.

The thing that struck us all, everyone asked the question. They weren't out in the hallway together, so it wasn't as if they had spoken amongst themselves.

But, this is a re-cast of a re-cast of a re-cast. The other fifty actresses we auditioned back in Feb and April never asked. They all had the same sides.

I dont follow your comments..

Too much subtext, what does that mean?

So, 50 people prior to this post inherently understood the "with a smile" line. Today few on IT get it, and the 4 actresses you auditioned didn't get it. I guess the universe changed on you.. :)

Shari exits her bedroom and has to dodge Nancy’s near miss groin kick.

NANCY
Sorry.

Shari get's into Nancy's space.

SHARI
You know what you'll have to do if you
ever connect? ... With a smile.

Nancy closes the gap between them.

NANCY
What?

Shari blows Nancy a kiss.

It means the meaning is hidden so deep in "with a smile" that none of these four got it. As well as the first 2 out of 3 here.

But, once it was explained they all went "Oh, okay".

Seriously, it's a pretty basic throw around phrase. It's one of those lines that okay actresses say with the same delivery. It's the really good ones that add nice emphasis.

It's just a bizarre oddity.

Ok, I guess I'll be the one to ask. Ussiners, are you shooting porn?

Yep. Deep hot lesbian kick boxing porn.
