Wow! Unlimited Movies For $50/mo.

MoviePass, a new $50-per-month service for film fans, will let subscribers watch unlimited movies in theaters using their smartphones as tickets.

Using an HTML5 application (native smartphone apps coming soon), MoviePass will let users search for a film, find a local show time, check in to the theater and go straight to the ticket-taker.

The all-you-can-watch service, announced Monday with a private beta starting in the San Francisco Bay Area just in time for the Fourth of July blockbuster weekend, is looking to shake up the theater business in much the same way Netflix has changed the DVD-rental game.

Movie junkies score!

Yeah but.. with the exception of any given December - when was the last time five movies were released in a month that you actually wanted to see?

 You're missing the point. Married people can get away from their spouses in air conditioning for $50/mo.

That sounds like a sweet deal for those who really love the first-run cinemas.

I bet they're banking on it working like the gym-membership model, though.

But... Does it come with popcorn?
Just Joking, that would be awesome, but i can't see myself seeing that many movies in a month.
7 dollars a ticket, would mean I would have to see at least 8 films in 1 month for it to pay off, I don't have that much time on my hands.

Hmm, that's really interesting.

If MoviePass are bypassing the ticket sales from the actual cinema booths, and MoviePass is dealing directly with third-party online ticket vendors (call them OnlineTix for this), the cinema chains really have no input unless they want to start refusing the tickets from OnlineTix too.

The chains have nothing to lose, though, either as the OnlineTix is taking the risk.

Nick's card is pretty cool.

When I was a film reviewer, I had unlimited movies for $0 a month.

I miss it a little, but I watch so much at home now on my giant TV screen that it makes up for it. And there's never somebody sitting next to me texting for the entire movie.
