White balance comparison

Ok, this is a sequel to my earlier post in which I asked how to set WB. Now, my question is: When is the RIGHT time to set white balance? Cause I've been doing some experiments yesterday and here are some pics of my work so far... These pics have been done with a 500W light (dont know how much is that in Kelvin) so you tell me which one works best in comparison with the others. And also guess in which pic have I used AUTO WB and in which MANUAL (One-Push) WB... just checking something ;)

Looks close enough :)

It doesn't take much to fall into a habit of setting new WB, when needed. Just like clockwork, after a while.

By that time you'll be unable to watch someone's video in the Screening Room without your first thought being,

"These clowns didn't WB their camera!".

You'll be able to tell at a glance. (Especially when tungsten lights are involved).

Have fun with it, practise it, and use it. :)

Also, experiment & try setting non-white cards to see what you can do.

DvdGuy,
You inspired me to try my own WB experiment.

This compared Manual WB to Auto Indoor WB. Everything else was Auto (exposure and focus) I wonder though, If I should have set the Auto WB to Outdoor, I was using Compact Fl. lights.. etc.. ???

Manual WB looks much better to me

I was using UV and Circular Polarizing filters. See this thread for my lighting experiment http://www.indietalk.com/showthread.php?t=20484

atleast you have filters! I should get me one of those filters, to experiment on :) lucky you

I checked your camera specs "DCR-SR57E" uses the SAME filter size, so you could use the EXACT same filters I have.. Got mine on Ebay less than $20 for all 4.

Key is "filter thread size" and from the sony web site I see that your camera is Filter Diameter is 30mm.

Ebay for "30mm UV CP filter", "30mm ND filter"

We can even get add on lenses for this size.. cool! Dont know if they work. .but hey..

I called around my local stores, no one had any 30mm filters in..

DCR-TRV27 (old miniDV tape handycam) Your camera seems nice!

We can use any filter that fits a 30mm thread.

What they do is another thing... Google for "Neural Density Filter" and "Circular Polarize Filter"

well my camera is allright I would say. The damn thing doesnt even have a mic input! :D although, thats an advantage cause Audio Recorders do better quality sound when recording and I need to buy one. And they're pretty expensive. Ok im gonna google it. thanks :)
