What are some good ideas for a space opera.

Besides going back to classic sci-fi and solid writing about people and relationships do some research on real science.

Asteroid to Pass Extremely Close By Earth On Monday

http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20110624/sc_space/asteroidtopassextremelyclosebyearthonmonday

UPDATE for 5:35 p.m. ET: NASA has recalculated the time of closest approach for this event to be about 3 1/2 hours later than initially reported. The change is reflected below.

Here's something to dwell on as you head to work next week: A small asteroid the size of a tour bus will make an extremely close pass by the Earth on Monday, but it poses no threat to the planet........

Then I guess "mainly or entirely in outer space" becomes
the issue.

"Star Wars" is set mostly on planets - not earth, but on
planets. "Dune" is set almost entirely on a planet. "2001"
(not a space opera) is set almost entirely in outer space.

The more I read about this "genre" the more I dislike its
use. "Soap opera" is an almost derogatory term. I simply
will not call "Star Wars" (or especially "Empire") a space
opera.

You guys that are interested in "space operas" should definitely check out the PC game "Homeworld" and "Homeworld 2". The music, audio, cut scenes and story are outstanding. Great inspiration for any scifi fan.

No one? C'mon folks, help a guy out.

It's incredibly difficult to give an answer when the question is "what movie should I make?".

Well, what movie do you want to make? You must tell a story that interests you or I guarantee that the final result will be awful. If you've never made a film before, then the final result will probably be awful anyways and you should be prepared for that.

What are your resources? How much time do you have? How many actors at your disposal? Can you build sets? Make 3D imagery and animation? Do you know how to work with motion tracking and compositing? Do you have a budget? If not, how much of your personal money are you willing to spend? I've thought of all kinds of space movie ideas (and am even writing the scripts, just for fun and practice) but unless someone gives me $60 million, none of them will ever get made.

At this lower end of the filmmaking spectrum you'll need to tailor your script around what you have. For example, I am working on my first feature-length film and I have one actor and one location. The script is being written under those restrictions. If you list here what you have at your disposal I could try to toss some ideas at you that might fit, but at the very least you need to be able to come up with your own ideas even if just at a high level (so that another can flesh out the idea into an actual screenplay).
