tips and guidance.

Hello,
I was looking for help where I could directly talk to people and found this place.
If this is the wrong sub topic, my apologizes.
I have been researching online and had a moderate amount of success but I'm finding the info on reviews to be a bit contradicting to one another, I'm hoping to be told straight.

I'm looking for advice for shopping for cameras. it seems like what I'm looking for is only going to be achieved with a budget greater than $800. Ideally my budget is $500, $800 max.

what I need help on a side from recommendation, is what I should be looking for in a video camera.
let me explain what I plan to film.

The majority if not all of its uses is to film cars, so obviously outside, and in day-light. If I'm understanding correctly (forgive me I am not camera/filmmaking savvy.) I looks like an EVF is a necessary feature. Also battery life, since I will most likely not be around any power source, I think something around 4 hours sounds good. good image stability to minimize camera shaking if you know what I mean. I don't have the money to invest in a track just yet and I will be doing a lot of close ups and pans on a tripod, which will be riding on asphalt. I need a camera that can capture high definition (1080@ 30 and or 60 FPS), crisp colors, and handle low light situations (a lot of footage will also be at night and the only source of light will be from the headlights of the cars) so something with low to no noise would be ideal.
and most importantly audio. I see so many videos with great shots suffer from having poor audio. I will be investing in an external camera mounted mic, so a mic aux jack is key. I need camera that digitally records, I don't want to deal with mini DVs and I have a couple of 32GB SD cards. a camera with two SD card slots would be great as well. a camera with full manual features would be Ideal to capture the best of every shot.

so tell me, what do you think are key feature to look out for to take up the roles that I need it to deliver.
Any recommendations of video cameras that fit the bill?

If you have any question or need more info let me know.

Welcome!

A lot of information here on cameras.

Check out the newbies, cinemtaography and camera and lenses sections in the forum. Go through the old threads there and ull find lots of useful research. After that, if u still have any questions, just post here again.

:)

You are not going to get good sound if your total budget is only $800. Depending on the camera you may need an external recorder - which I would recommend anyway no matter what camera you decide upon - in addition to a mic. That could easily eat up $300 plus the cost of the mic.

A mic input is essential. I notice you don't mention audio at all.
Manual control over iris and shutter and focus is essential.
Do not think about image stabilization - learn to handle the camera
well.
No camera - even a top of the line one - will make up for no, or poor,
lighting. That should not be part of your needs. Learn to light well.
Right now it seems you want a $500/$800 camera that will fix the
limitations you face as a filmmaker. That is an unrealistic expectation.

The Canon HF M41 is a fine starter camera. Get it and start making
your movies!
