Meh. As a T3i user, I don't think there's a lot of improvements to be jealous about.

Can't wait to see how the high ISO and the AF performs though. Maybe I'll get a little bit jealous if those turn out to be amazing.

Oh well, I prefer to shoot video with EX1R or C300. :P

My 450D can only shoot stills and is still working.

But it's usually nonsense to get every new model, unless you really need it.
When you skip a model or two you'll get real updates ;)

18-135 STM Lens

With the recent announcement about the zinc-bis problem on the rubber grips of the t4i I've held off on purchasing this camera. I'm definitely going to wait until Cyber Monday. I'll get the best deals and I'm hoping by then the manufacturing issue will be resolved. I'm also hoping that by that point the 18-135 STM lens will be released as I want to get both of them (the 40 mm F2.8) along with it. Has anyone been able to purchase the 18-135 STM yet? Are you in the United States? If you were able to get it here, where was it purchased? Right now, whenever I go to Amazon they always list a 1-3 month wait for the camera body and no mention at all of availability for the 18-135. I'm really looking forward to getting this camera. I feel like Canon has finally caught up to Sony and Panasonic and that the new features (autofocus, touchscreen, digic 5) will have made their way up the EOS line after Photokina in September.

I rented the T4i to compare it to my GH2 and, sadly, it hasn't quite caught up. It stops recording after 22 minutes in HD and the viewfinder goes blank in video mode.

There's supposedly a mirrorless announcement coming from Canon soon. That will fix the viewfinder problem. If they lift the recording time limit, and they are price competitive with the GH3, I will take a very serious look at Canon again.

Hey, man. How's it going? I apologize for the delay in my response. I guess, since I hadn't planned on buying the t4i until after Photokina (I was going to make my purchase on Cyber Monday to save a nice chunk of cash) so that I could see exactly what all the goodies were to be offered, the announcement made over the weekend about the recall and the resulting Amazon removal of the t4i , it is nothing more than a disappointment, but I understand that from a business standpoint, for all involved, it makes the most sense.
  • How long did you rent the t4i?
  • What lenses did you rent? Were you able to get both STMs?
  • Are the mirrors the reason you feel that your GH2 out performs the newest Canon?
As far as the 22 minute limit goes, I don't think I've ever shot any angle of a scene for more than 10 seconds at the most and if I did, it was to keep a tape rolling because I dropped a line, was unhappy with delivery so I did my usual paint the sky blue... four, three, two, one... action. And reshot the take. So I can live with a 22 minute time limit, which as I understand it, keeps the camera well under the 30 minute limit for DSLRs which shield them from the FTC tariff on video cameras. I don't shoot documentary work so I really wouldn't have a need for an extended take.
All the pieces are in place for a Canon mirrorless line to emerge. They've got the pancake lens out (probably the first of many), they've got the automatic focus tracking down, they've integrated a flip out touch screen, and I don't think they can take much more of the barrage being delivered by the other major manufacturers who have already chosen to jump into the fray along with Panasonic/Olympus. I believe that the mirrorless format/ MFT is the future of photography combining the best of motion picture and high quality stills in one machine. While I have looked at many cameras and considered each on its own merits as well as compared to others, the Gh2 and the t4i both lack only one thing which prevents them from becoming the ultimate camera: weather sealing. If the GH3 is weather sealed or the new Canon line comes out with a weather sealed MFT, I'll be sold. I have always favored the reputation and the IQ of Canon. However, with this latest round of manufacturing B.S. by Canon I feel very let down by a company that had previously always delivered.

Hi Coldhitz, to answer your questions:

1) I rented it for 3 days. It wasn't really an in-depth test - all I wanted to do was compare the T4i's new features (e.g., the touchscreen, autofocus and video-optimized lens) to their Panasonic equivalents.

2) I was only able to get the 40mm STM. A nice lens, but noisy compared to the Panasonic 14mm pancake.

3) All the lack of a mirror does is make the camera lighter and smaller - and provide a viewfinder that works in video mode. The GH2's real advantage is how it resolves images and avoids moire, which boils down to better signal processing in the Venus engine than in DIGIC.. Side by side, the Canons are pretty clearly softer and more prone to moire. To be fair, some people like the softer Canon look better and think the Panasonic look is too "videoish" - I don't.

Best,

Bill
