The Expendibles -- Badly Filmed

So, your role model is Paul W.S. Anderson.

It's all starting to make sense to me.

;)

My roles models are: Roman Polanski, James Cameron, and the truck loads of TV episodes I have of the original Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, One Step Beyond, The Man From Uncle, and James Bond movies. I like Paul W.S. Anderson's work on the above mentioned productions. But, I won't call him a role model. I also LOVE Japanese monster movies, Japanese science fiction movies, and Asian martial arts movies.

so thats why afterlife looks like a decent film ...... and in talks of role models i gotta throwdown with Polanski K Smith and John Singleton and Cracker Funk

On EXPENDABLES:
Cast was great... which made the rest of the film a disappointment to me. It was too boring and cliche filled to me. The plot was very undeveloped for a film of that size. I kept waiting for something unexpected or that I hadn't seen before or at the very least some thought-provoking characterization. There was ONE scene with good characterization in my opinion, and that was the preface for the climax.
I actually like the cinematography of the ENTIRE Bourne series. I think a lot of handheld/steadycam makes it seem more real and less staged, if done well, it can evoke the same feel that Cloverfeild accomplished; to put the audience in the action.
Expendables, however did NOT do it well. And it was too choppy to be consistently followed.
To me the whole movie screamed "BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!!" and action is my favorite genre... I was hoping for at least something new, or something hilarious. To me Expendables did not deliver.
But I did thoroughly enjoy watching Terry Crews man an AA12. For some reason, that guy and that gun is a hilariously bloody combination!

I'll tell you one that MIGHT be good judging by the trailer, however. A film called R.E.D (Retired. Extremely Dangerous.) Lot of strong starpower in that one and a different approach to the whole CIA theme.

You can't say we didn't warn you. For what it's worth, I think "Scott Pilgrim" is a better investment of your time and money.

I'M SOMEBODY'S ROLE MODEL! WOOHOOOOO! Uh oh. Wait a minute. That might not be such a good thing.

EDIT: Wait. Stop. Back-tracking on my previous statement. Considering the fact that you're planning on watching "Expendables", I can assume you want to see some sweet action.

You've probably already seen it, but just in case you haven't, let me offer a high recommendation for "Predators". It's fucking awesome. Arguably one of the most faithful sequels ever made -- they really captured the feel of the first movie, while finding a way to make it fresh and new.

Predators rocks because it is to the Predator franchise what Aliens is to Alien. And that suits me just fine, 'cause Aliens is fighting it out with Saving Private Ryan and Serenity for my number one film of all time.

I don't disagree with any of your points made above except for this one:

Pass on this one gang.

I think people expect too much from Hollywood these days. This is a popcorn action-flick, not a rewrite of Apocalypse Now. Stallone set out to make an 80's action movie with old 80's action stars and although it definitely has a more modern feel with the quick cuts, I think he mostly succeeded.

I'm the type who enjoys being entertained. I think the primary function of a movie is to entertain. I don't need to be educated and I find movies with 'a message' are generally either preachy, arrogant, or self-righteous. Who is this film-maker telling me how to live? If I want a lesson in ethics and morality, I'll go to university and listen to a published lecturer with a PhD.

Point being, if you're looking to be entertained for a couple of hours, this movie fits the bill nicely. It's a guy's movie and unashamedly macho, with no real point or lesson in it other than the complete farce of four and a half men taking out a two-hundred plus army in a fortified villa. And that's why I liked it.

Maybe I'm just the type who is more entertained by action that has meaning. It doesn't have to be a moral or ethical lesson, but to me, a film should be more than "BOOM! ...That was cool."

You give up a good storyline and plot and you sell the action short in my opinion. Films without plot are like premature ejaculation; it's great for that split-second of excitement, but in the end, everyone goes home unsatisfied. :weird::D:(

Well, I agree with you point, 100%. All of my favorite action movies have a story that pulled me in.

However, I'm not sure that you made the best example to compare it to, because in the your example, at least one person is going home satisfied. :P

Ha Ha Well I was going to say "bad sex" at first. For some reason I always relate movies to sex... probably because I'm young and love both a little too much :D

I hear what he was saying about being entertained. I just think in order to have good action, there must be good story, cinematographic, and character build up to make it worthwhile. I want to see a hero fighting for something that makes sense. Or something that makes sense to the character at least.

Oh and, I believe there is some responsibility as filmmakers to create objective and moral films as well. Film is the most modern form of literature. As many of my countrymen are idiots, (I love America, but you know it's true...) you can give the gift of knowledge through film. I don't mean make every film political or a documentary, but you CAN do more than educate and not end up preaching.

re

I really tried to get involved and enjoy this movie as much as I possibly could, but at the end of the day it fell flat like other movies similar to this.
I will say it did have some moments, particularly funny moments with Bruce Willis and Arnold in cameos. And I thought some of the action was pretty entertaining.
But overall nothing new is here, and all the recycled elements it uses are not even used well, so I must say I would skip this (unless you just need this kind of movie for pure entertainment and clearing your mind)

Aww, you just screwed my night. I've been waiting for this movie since January, and I always dedicate myself to go to the movies at least once every year and this was the movie on my list... Damn!

Stollone said it was the best action movie his ever made/played in, so I though "Damn, this is gonna be one old school die-hard 3 style action movie."

I take it its not then...

I watched the film the other night with some friends. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I heard people had mix feelings about it but then again who cares. I guess my way of thinking is go and see a movie to have fun. I would say that a small percentage of people don't go and see a movie for fun now. Its more of a professional film critic approach to watching a film. The film to me was just a live action video game with lots of killin with my favorite action stars. The same deal happened with Transformers 2. Everybody and their brother dissected that film. Said it was horrible and all that jazz. Made some of my friends changed their mind about spending $7.50 to watch it. I dragged them along anywaysand after it was all said and done they were like, "wow. that was really good."

But TF2 sucked. As I mentioned before, I go once a year to the cinema, and I tend to select a summer blockbuster just to "chill" and not go into judge mode. But the movie was getting so god damn confusing with all the random shakey cam close-ups when the robots where fighting I had no idea as to what the hell was going on.

I was left with a weird feeling of WTF as I walked out... I heard his working on TF3 so lets see how that goes.
