Short film WITHOUT CUT !

Hey friends i hope you remmebr that i gave a good news that i am in the best Arts college of Pakistan and i am in the filmmaking course. Just wanted to share that i have assigned my first project that is i have to make a 50 sec short film which should have a story and shouldnt have a cut shot in it. Well i think being the firt time it will be really tough and great experience. I have 1 week to write the story (because the college is OFF for a week) and then in next week after approval we will start filming. And i am too excited. Just wanted to be wished best of luck by my friends and GURUS. :)

Regards

That's a great project. I highly advice you watch the film: "Nine Lives". It's a compilation of shorts, that follow nine different women along 10 minute clips...every segment is one entire shot without cutting. Amazing job by the DP and Director...and the actors are powerful.

My blurb stinks, here is a much better explanation, "This is a gorgeous film. It's both strong and delicate, treating the interwoven nine lives of the title with uncompromising authenticity. Each portion is preceded by a woman's name, the name of the woman focused on in that section – and then we dive into what Garcia describes as "looking through the window into someone's house", the examination of nearly fifteen minutes of that life, each done in one take. Yes, just ONE take -- the camera follows and weaves about the characters as in a dance. The result is moving, powerful, luminous."

Here is the IMDb link to the film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420015/

You only have one minute to fill...that shouldn't be a problem. After watching Nine Lives, you'll breath easier. :) We got it on Netflix...so check it out!

Good luck.

I advise you to watch children of men, maybe it could be a war scene and theres a long take martial arts scene in warrior king but personally i think you should do a pov parkour freerunning sequence, just need to find a good runner and a could enviroment strap the camera to his head and also you could have a voiceover about his freerunning so it could be like a mini doc

50 seconds without a cut should be easy and a lot of fun. In my film,
"dark crimes" I have a 22 minute shot right at the beginning
without any cuts. Seven actors in a bar and there is even a short
bar fight.

You'll do well!

Zensteve
. You sound pretty excited

I am on 7th sky :)...

I will get a CAM from College management so the big headache is gone, may be the lights too.
Well as directorik said he already have a 22 mins short film without a cut, it sounds great. I have written a small story and i am rewriting it and then i will do story board of it that how the Camera moves will take place. The actual problem was to get the story. No doubt filming without a cut is a little issue but after all the biggest issue is of a story. And thankfully i got one in mind. :)
By the way Motorstorm thanks for the advice but i think i will not be able to set the camera movement in such a way that the charachter can remain in frame all the time neither i will get so many equipments. Only camera and Lights will be available.

I will try to see the above mentioned films if i could get them from some where.

Thanks

Thanks for the link spankydoesfilm i just saw the video. It was really great and gave me a chance to learn new things. Though i think the filmmaker has used crane or jib for the movement (which will not be available to me) but still it was a great work
Thanks a lot for the link otherwise i had to search for the film in Market to see this non cut scene.

Another one is Reservoir Dogs...that's a long sequence in the Warehouse, with a lot of movement.

Doesn't Goodfellas have a really long one in the beginning too? A suuuuper long tracking shot with the actors showing up at the club, walking through the kitchen...that was awesome.

And if you want to ever use a fight scene, watch The Protector...there is a massive one-shot fight scene. They even follow the fight up a huge flight of stairs.

Just make sure you don't go stagnant with the camera, which I'm sure you won't...but don't move TOO often. And when you do make a movie, base your move off of the characters blocking, use their movement as a pivot or anchor for your choices.

Move the characters from point A to point B, and base each blocking-segment as if you were shooting a single shot--when you are ready to have the action move again, you'll simply create a tween (transition movement) between each 'shot' or shot choice. Make it smooth, ease in and out, with gentle arches.

Keep in mind, you don't want to be aware of the cameras movement. You don't want people to even notice you're not cutting. You don't need to get all artsy with it...keep it smooth.

Thanks for the advice M1chae1 because i have to show some story too in that short film. something even a little message so a fight scene will be a little hard. :D

As you said M1chae1
Keep in mind, you don't want to be aware of the cameras movement. You don't want people to even notice you're not cutting. You don't need to get all artsy with it...keep it smooth.

Well i have made a concept and in that short film actor for most of the time will be sitting and camera will move. I hope it goes this way. have to do the paper work of the camera movements. :)

As M1chae1 you said base your move off of the characters blocking, use their movement as a pivot or anchor for your choices.

i wanted to ask this thing from some one what is the meaning of characters blocking and can you explain a little more about this line as you said use their movement as a pivot or anchor for your choices
